Furnace Hill cemetery is on Hwy 18 west on the edge of Vernon, possibly inside the city limits. Hightogy is a small community about 5 or 6 miles south of Vernon on Hwy 17. I don't know the name of the road but turn west on a gravel road in Hightogy to go to Mt. Zion. Try emailing the librarian or the genealogy society at the Vernon library for help with this. Several of the cemeteries have been indexed. If these haven't been indexed there may some local people that could help you The Lamar County Genealogical & Historical society can be reached at the Mary Wallace Cobb library in Vernon by email at MWCLIB@fayette.net Good luck, Theresa Whitaker
I am hoping that someone on this list might be able to help me! I have some relatives that are supposedly buried at Furnace Hill Cemetery in Lamar Co., AL and I have no idea where it is. I tried online to find an address so I could write to them and found nothing. Does anyone know where this cemetery is and who I could contact to ask if my John Thomas Moore and wife Sarah are buried there? In addition, I have the same problem with the cemetery at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hightogy, AL (Lamar Co.) - I have some relatives that are there for sure and I can't seem to find an address to write and ask if the church has any additional information other than what is on the headstones. Can anyone help out there? Thank you so much in advance! Allison M. Saxman

I am still researching the descendants of Charner J and Elizabeth Wolstenholme Colvin. Charner came from Chester Co SC to Greene Co AL and then to Lamar Co. Charner b 25 Sep 1824 in Chester Co SC and Elizabeth b, Jan 1827 in AL. They are buried in an old cemetery near Asbury Methodist Church. Their son, Joe Sephus or Joseph married Mittie S; Joseph died 1953 and Mittie, 1929 and both are buried in Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery. My husband is descended thru their son Willie Charner and Lena Mordecai. Willie had brothers: Audie, Cheslie, Hunter L, Ernest, and sister, Mary. Lena's parents are Tom Mordecai and Jerusha Stacy. I would be so grateful to hear from anyone having information and willing to share it on any branch of this family.

Marion and Lamar Counties have a large number of ORear descendants through: 1- Frances ORear/Moses Loyd who were in already in MS Territory by the time that area became Marion Co., AL. 2- Permelia ORear m. C.C. McKay abt. 1836(known connections to Free, Bannister, Pyron, Felkins) 3- Daniel ORear/Mahala Moore who settled near Detroit in 1860s and their children some of whom are John ORear m. Cressie Gann (dau. of Smith Gann) Minerva ORear m. George S. McKay Lucinda ORear m. Edward James Beard Malinda ORear m. ??Johnson William ORear m. Sarah Terrell (dau. of Sarah Glasscock/B.H.Terrell) Frances M.ORear m. Wm. E. Hall The Jasper Library has some books of ORear descendancy charts from early 1600s in VA. There are also 2 file drawers of ORear information. There is a good deal of information available on the ORear family as they migrated south to AL. Our ORears who moved on to Marion/Lamar Counties could use some updating in the files and this would be a good time to begin bringing some information together----would LOVE to have any help help! Interestingly, the ORear and Glasscock families of Marion County trace back to Faquier Co., VA, where their families connected as early as 1724 when Margaret ORear m. John Glasscock.
Do tax and/or school records exist for Lamar County for 1867 through 1875? If so, would the records be in Lamar County or in the State Archives? Thank you, Peggy Horton
whoops just realized that my Howells, Elijah and what not are not from Tuscaloosa but on the other side of my family...my mothers side...my fathers line...Becks is from Tuscaloosa so I confused the two when looking at my gedcom...thinking that the Howells were connected to my Becks in Tuscaloosa...instead of my James line from Iowa... Sorry, but you are still welcome to have a look at what I do have...maybe you will find a connection since the names are so similiar. Pat Beck Falls
Hi there....I knew those names sounded familiar...I went and looked in my database and sure enought James Howell and the rest the Howells you named are connected to me...Elijah Howell is married to my third cousin fourth removed...Mary Susan Elizabeth (Betsy) James...the James line is my direct line....I have quite a bit of information on the Howell family, their kith and kin...if you have gedcom capabilities will be glad to send what I got...I also have other "cousin" researchers on the James line that can possibly give you more information as it seems one of them was who supplied me with mine...I have a website that is provided by my family.com through ancestry.com that I am an administrator to...most of the people there are either researching the James line...or my Beck line...you are welcome to become a member there...lots of info..lots of pictures in the family album...just let me know...
