Sorry everyone..........This should have been a birth date of 16 Sep 1816 not 1806. Jacque, Thank you so much for posting this. I am in the process of trying to prove Thomas BLACK of AR as the same as my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas BLACK b. 16 Sep 1806 in York Co, SC. He married Nancy GLADNEY (probably in Fairfield Co, SC where they are listed on 1850 census) and had 2 daughters, Mary E BLACK (mine who married William T MILLER) and Sarah Jane BLACK (married William Harrison NICHOLS). They moved to Drew Co, AR and listed there on 1860, 1870 and 1880 census and buried in Lincoln Co, AR. Do you (or anyone on the list) have any knowledge of this family? I will gladly exchange info. I have been collecting information on John C and Elizabeth's children in hopes of proving this connection. I want to apologize to you, if you get doubles. Looking for the burial place of Millard EDNEY, b. 1856, d. 8 May 1877; John N. EDNEY, b. 20 Oct. 1832, d. 8 Mar. 1896, and Louvenia C. EDNEY, b. 16 Aug. 1837, d. 7 Feb. 1916. I 'think' that John and Louvenia were Millard's parents. Possibly buried in Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery, near Fernback, Lamar Co., AL. Millard died in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. but is not buried with his wife, Martha Virginia 'Jennie' LAVENDER. Can anyone help me in my search? Does anyone have or know of cemetery transcription records for New Hope Cemetery (near Vernon I think)? If not, does anyone live near there that wouldn't mind taking a look and finding out if Benjamin F. Smith and wife Julia Ann Cribbs Smith are buried there and what the dates are on their gravestones? Thanks, Jan Melton

From the book "Lamar County Alabama, A History to 1900" by Rose Marie Smith, the Betts beat was west and slightly northwest of Vernon. Unfortunately, Ms. Smith does not give the exact boundaries on the map drawn in her book.
Betts Beat will be in the Lamar County Lake area west of Vernon. I'm not exactly sure but I think it's between or around county hwys 21 and 31.
