Mr. and Mrs. Farrell ran the Birmingham City Jail 1918-1920 at least. B.M. Allen was an attorney who became a judge and represented at least two African American soldiers during the same period. Erle Pettus was U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District and Edgar C. Caldwell was in the jail from 1919-1920. In a letter he wrote to the NAACP in 1920, he speaks of his wife Tressie Ford Caldwell and the kindness of the Farrells.Tressie disappears after 1920 and it appears she did not return to live in Atlanta after Edgar's death. I suspect she remained in the Birmingham area. Do any of these names ring a bell for members of the list? Thank you. Sharon K.
