    3. Roughly.... Alabama and Mississippi were part of the Mississippi territory from 1798 till 1817. In 1817 Mississippi became a state and two years later in 1819 the territory of Alabama became a state. There were very few (if any) settlers in Jeff Co until after the last battle of the Creek Wars (abt. 1813-1818) in 1818. In March 1819 the government recorded the sale of the first lot (formerly Indian) of land. The people started showing up in droves!! They settled on much of the land before it was even surveyed. Birmingham is a relatively young town and was 'incorporated' Dec. 19, 1871. Elyton, Jonesboro and a few other small towns were the nucleus of Jefferson Co. until after the Civil War. Jefferson Co was created December 13, 1819 from (I believe) Blount and Tuscaloosa Co.
