    3. Mark, The index is on microfilm. A lot of libraries in AL have a 6 roll set that covers 1908-1959. The rolls are divided into several time periods, example: the first on covers several time segments starting with 1908-1917, then 1918-1919, etc. The LDS has a larger set that covers later years as well. One can order these through local LDS church libraries or at Wallace State College at Hanceville, AL for about $3-4. The LDS also have hundreds of rolls that have the actual certificates on them. One must first find the name in the index and then use the Vol and cert # to locate the proper roll to order for the certificate. The other way is to order the certificate from the AL Dept of Vital Stistics in Montgomery(either by mail or at a county health department). The fee is $12, which is not returned if the certificate is not found. It is a good idea to first locate the name on the index in order to be assured that there is a certificate available. Locating the name on the index gives the Vol and # and the "version" of the name to ensure that it will be found. Hope this helps.
