Hi, The name of Hugh McVay, is identified with the early history of Alabama. He was one of the citizens choosen to write the first Constitution of Ala. He was 31 yrs. old. He moved from South Carolina to the Cty. of Madison. When the Territorial Mississippi was divided Madison became part of Ala. and McVay was elected to Ala. Legislature. He was elected President of the Senate in 1836. When Clement C. Clay, Governor of Alabama, was elected to the United States Senate (June 1837), Hugh McVay became , under the law, Acting Governor of the State, and held that office for six months until Governor Bagby was inaugurated.
