Below is a reply I received from a Navy Vet, does anyone know where he is buried? delilah ---------------------------------- Here you go Delilah...................it is the "Cassin" Born to Robert L. Ingram and his wife Naomi Elizabeth Lea in Pratt City, Alabama, Ingram entered the Navy 24 November 1903. His ship, Cassin, was attacked by the German submarine U-61 off Ireland on 16 October 1917. Gunner's Mate First Class Ingram spotted the approaching torpedo, realized it would strike close by explosives, thus dooming the ship, and rushed to jettison the ammunition. He was blown overboard when the torpedo struck, thus becoming the first enlisted man killed in action in World War I as he saved his ship and shipmates. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on that day. ----------------------------------------------------------- | Article printed in Birmingham Age-Herald, October 18, 1917 | | | "The first man on an American war vessel to give his life in the fight for | world freedom (World War 1) was a Birmingham, Alabama man, Gunner's Mate | OSMOND KELLY INGRAM, of the United States Navy.
