I found a listing for a ROBERT CATES who is listed as a Stonemason, Location 823 14th St. S, in the 1888 Birmingham Directory. I think this may be the second husband of my gggrandmother, Mary Jackson, who had two daughters, Ida and Lillie, by him. I have a photograph of the two girls which has stamped under their picture, "Covell, 1817 1st Avenue, Birmingham, Ala" that they had signed and sent to their half brother, my grandfather. I have not found them on the 1900 Alabama census and will be checking the 1910 census tomorrow, but in the meantime, if anyone has any information on this family, I would appreciate hearing from them.
