There is a fenced lot with a guard next to the new library. You can walk along the street and across 20th street to the Southern History Collection and Microfische/Microfilm. The entrance to this section faces the park, not 20th St. Or you can go up the elevator or escalator and cross over to the other building. Birmingham has really done a nice job on the streets and they look good. I have always felt safe. There is a good deli (Sophie's) on the corner of 20th St. & 8th Ave. if you are staying all day.
