Best, 77, died at 4:37 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, in Herrin Hospital. John was born Nov. 15, 1926, to Lacy and Daphne (Jones) Best in Jasper, Ala. He married Shirley Berry on Nov. 21, 1945, in Clinton, and she survives in Energy. John was retired from Sun Oil Company. He served in Italy in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Survivors include his mother, Daphne Best of Jasper, Ala.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Gary Trout of Johnston City and Jenny and Renny Garshelis of Charleston; four grandsons and their wives, Kris and Candy Danner of Austin, Texas, Mike Danner of Romeoville, Tony and Jenny Danner of Marion and Nick and Carmen Garshelis of Boise, Idaho; one great-granddaughter, Isabella Garshelis of Boise, Idaho; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Sue Best of Birmingham, Ala.; one sister, Sara Clem of Jasper, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews. He was looking forward to birth of first great-grandson, Peyton Danner. He was preceded by his father and his grandson, Jerry Garshelis. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, in Maplewood Cemetery in Marion, with military rites by VFW Post 1301. Chaplains Jim Barrell and Glenn Sanders will officiate and eulogy will be given by Renny Garshelis. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Memorials may be given to Shawnee Christian Nursing Home. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
