I see by Dorothy's comment that she has received responses to her query privately, not through the list. This question arises: Is this a person-to-person list or a public list? My reason for joining a list is to learn from others. How can I gain any incidental learning if replies to other people's queries never show up on the public list? If replies are largely personal, then the list is not nearly as useful to me as it might be. It also tempts me to be a poor list citizen -- I can join temporarily if I have a specific question, but I don't need to hang around and contribute to the common effort. Are people consciously choosing to reply just to the person who posts the query, or is it happening that way because, when you hit the REPLY key to send a response, it is the query-asker's address, not the list's, that automatically appears in the TO window and you don't think to copy the list's address into that spot? If this is the case, the system needs to be reprogrammed so that the list's address is the one that automatically appears as the recipient of a reply message. I think we should generally be responding to the list, not to individuals.
