When I first visited Birmingham in 1944 as an 18 yr old war bride from the midwest, and never having been south of the Mason Dixon before, the three must see things were Terminal Station, Alabama Theatre, and Vulcan. Vulcan didn't have elevators and it was a challenge to climb all those steps to the observation tower. Sadly, beautiful Terminal Station was allowed to go the demolition route. But the other two were saved, although the last time I visited Vulcan a few years ago, one of his arms was lying on the ground while funds were being sought for restoration. I think streetcar fare was 7 cents and a transfer required a couple of tokens in addition. R Adams
