    1. [ALJEFFER] Marriage records, 1930

    3. My grandparents, Willard Herndon Whittington and Ella Cordell Lee, were married on October 6, 1930. At the time, both lived in Mississippi. Cordell was 15; Willard was 22. Cordell's mother had remarried after her first husband (Cordell's father) had died. She and her second husband had moved to Alabama, and Cordell was living with her maternal grandparents. Her grandfather would not give Cordell permission to marry Willard; she was too young and he was too old. So, Cordell and Willard drove to Alabama to get her mother's permission to marry. It was given, and they were married there. My grandparents had been married for 57 years when my grandmother passed away. My grandfather passed away last year. My problem is that no one knows exactly where in Alabama they were married! A couple of distant relatives seem to recall that it was Birmingham, but, bless their hearts, both of these ladies are in their 90's. I would like to have some confirmation before I send off for a copy of a record, only to find that there is no record there. I have already tried Alabama Vital Statistics, and ALDAH. Now I'm praying that someone has access to the marriage records at the Jefferson County courthouse, and will be willing to check them out for Willard and Cordell. Thanks so much for reading this, and bless you if you can help! Sharon
