Researching the following family names: TYLER/MORRIS/TIDWELL My grandmother, Queenie Morris, died on September 12, 1945 after a fall from a window of a hotel located at 205 N. 24 Street in Birmingham. Was that the Hillman Hotel? She passed away at the Hillman Hospital, was buried at Mt Hope Cemetery, Brown-Service was the funeral home. Would anyone have access to any news stories that may have appeared at that time in any local newspapers? Or maybe even an obit? By the way, I enjoy all the stories the subscribers to this list have shared. I never had the opportunity to know my ancestors from your area and any recollections you may have help fill that void. Thank you in advance.
I can picture that block in my mind, but I don't remember a hotel of any size there. That would have been about 5 blocks east of the main downtown area. It would have been a small hotel. There was some discussion recently about City Directories. I don't remember whether it was stated that the BPL staff would do look-ups. Describe that block for us so we can picture it too! Jim Nix wrote: >I can picture that block in my mind, but I don't remember a hotel of any >size there. I know nothing much about Birmingham, but I do know that for a time, early on, one of the prominent hotels was the Florence. I don't know whether or not it still existed in 1945. It is just another name for your consideration. John -- john garst [email protected]

It was the Florence Hotel that burned to the ground in the thirties. Incidentally, I don't think that there is any link between the Hillman Hotel and the Hillman Hospital except for the names. Was that the Hillman Hotel? I don't think it was the Hillman Hotel, unless my old brain is failing. To the best of my recollection, the Hillman Hotel burned to the ground some time in the thirties. There was another hotel located very near the offices of the Birmingham News newspaper, and the above address might fit that one better. If so, perhaps an inquiry sent to the archives of the Birmingham News might be helpful. Carl in Knoxville, Tennessee
You should be able to get an obit copy from the Birmingham Public Library on-line - they charge $5. but it is worth it, I was born at the Hillman Clinic in 1940, a free, charity clinic, no money then, no money now. The Liberty National Ins Co had a burial policy and it was called the Brown Service, but it was an ins burial policy, I still got mine, not worth but about $300.00 but daddy got one on all of us kids. I think Hillman was further south, like around S. 18th or 21st,(around where the UAB medical school is now) it may of been the Tutwiller, it was closer into what is now downtown and would be a north address. BTW I got an obit on a Charles Edmund MISSILLDINE, Jr., and I don't think it is mine. http://www.bplonline.org/ I didn't find the name on their database but I think you could get the librarian to look it up and copy for you. delilah ----- Original Message ----- From: "deb & jim" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2006 2:29 PM Subject: [ALJEFFER] Birmingham circa 1945 looking for news reports | Researching the following family names: TYLER/MORRIS/TIDWELL | | | My grandmother, Queenie Morris, died on September 12, 1945 after a fall from a window of a hotel located at 205 N. 24 Street in Birmingham. There are sections of the city directories for Birmingham which are arranged by street address. One could look for the address in the 1945 directory and probably find the name of the hotel. The Birmingham Public Library has directories, as well as Wallace State College Library. The Birmingham Public Library has microfilm of newspapers of that time period. Jim, I did a MapQuest on the address. Thought it might give us some insight about where it might have been. It comes up on the backside of Irondale so that doesn't seem right.
