I will certainly never forget East Lake park. It was there, the summer of about 1940, that I and my girl friend went swimming and ventured out to the deep part, where the diving board was. I never learned to tread water, someone got in front of me just as I reached up for the concrete platform, and down I went! Some kind soul reached down and pulled me up and "laid me out" on the platform -- scared half to death. Needless to say, that young man was instantly my hero!
