Thank you , Ken - SO much for that info. I appreciate it. They had a daughter named Vinie that married into my Ratliff line. Might you know any death date of her first husband Charlie D? Okay, thanks for this information, Mr. Jernigan. This does clear things up for me since this particular James Cunningham was born way after my 3rd great grandmother, Ann, and therefore, could not have been her father. The county was formed in 1803 and it contained portions of other counties formed after that. Most of it was in Davidson Co, TN prior to formation. So keep that in mind while researching the records for what is now Rutherford Co, TN. Also I have found so far that very few original pioneers of this area came here from South Carolina. Most of them came either from Virginia or North Carolina. Some even came from New England but very few listings for any of them born in South Carolina. I have not found any listings in the Pioneers book indicating a general move of families from this area to Jefferson Co, AL. Barry Jernigan
The book Rutherford Co, TN Pioneers Born Before 1800 has the following given names listed for the surname Johnson or Johnston. It's quite an exhaustive list so I will just list the given names here: Andrew; Archelaus Jarrett; Archibald; Benjamin; Edward; Elizabeth; Elizabeth Baker; George; Henry; Isaac; James; Jarratt; John; John H.; Josiah; Joshua; Larkin; Lively C.; Mary Davidson; Matthew; Nancy; Nidhaus; Rebecca; Robert; Samuel; Thomas "Tommy"; Thomas; Thomas B.; William Other locations mentioned in the accounts (other than Rutherford Co, TN): North Carolina; Craven Co, NC; Onslow Co, NC; Kentucky; Virginia; Coffee Co, TN; Lunenburg Co, VA; Other surnames associated with the Johnson or Johnston surname in these accounts: Smith; Durham; Baker; Rowland; White; Foster; Jarratt; Stubblefield; Eskridge; Banton; Arnold; Davidson; Miller; McLure; McFarland; Kuykendall; Taylor; Bailey Let me know if anything rings a bell...was the surname McLure mentioned in relation the Johnson name in the past? I thought it had been. Just in case here is that Johnson listing: #2932. Samuel Johnson owned property near Jefferson and Hugh Robinson's, 1807, [Rutherford Co Quarterly Minutes, B-32], Samuel Johnson m. Jan. 2, 1817 in Rutherford Co, Elizabeth McLure. Barry Jernigan
There are several references to Crocketts in my copy of the book, Rutherford Co, TN Pioneers Born Before 1800 -- These are excerpted versions of what is referenced in the book. 1169. Archibald Crockett 1170. David Crockett, not sure if it is THE Davy Crockett 1171. Fontaine/Fountain Posey Crockett (b. May 6, 1797), son of Colonel Anthony Crockett, an officer in the Revolutionary War. 1172. his brother, Granville Smith Crockett (b. Dec. 24, 1799) and died after 1842 1173. their brother, Overton Washington Crockett (b. Feb. 14, 1791 in Ky and died Apr. 23, 1864 in Rutherford Co, TN My copy of the book, Rutherford County, Tennessee History & Families has a biography of the Crockett Family of brothers Fontaine, Granville and Overton. The bio states in part... "In the winter of 1812, Overton and his brothers, Fontaine and Granville came from their home in Kentucky to join General Andrew Jackson's troops in New Orleans. They spent the night at 'Springfield', the home built by General John Smith on Manson Pike in Rutherford County." BTW, Manson Pike (though much changed by recent construction) still exists and is not too far from my parent's home. I've seen mention of the surname Crockett in recent posts regarding early pioneers of Jefferson Co, AL. BTW, both Fontaine and Overton married daughters of General John Smith. There are bios for General John Smith as well as tons of other Smiths in the book Rutherford Co, TN Pioneers Born Before 1800. Barry Jernigan who owns about 3/4 of an acre of land in Rutherford Co, TN ;-)
This is what it says for the Cunningham surname in my copy of the book, Rutherford County Tennessee Pioneers Born Before 1800 Compiled by Susan G. Daniel #1219. James Cunningham b. 1795-1800, was listed on the 1820 & 1830 census for Rutherford Co. He m. Jan. 12, 1820 in Rutherford Co., Rachel Thorn #1220. Joseph Cunningham m. Nov. 29, 1817 in Rutherford Co., Anny Knox #1221. Sally Cunningham was listed head of household in the 1820 census for Rutherford Co. #1222. William Cunningham purchased items at the estate sale of Samuel McCulloch in Rutherford Co. Feb. 4, 1809. [Record Book 2, page 72]. He was b. 1760-1770 on the 1820 & 1830 census of Rutherford Co. As it turns out, Jesse Cunningham & family were written up in The Heritage of Jefferson County, Alabama. I assumed that this source had been consulted, I guess. He "reportedly" had 8 sons & 2 daughters, "one daughter not found." They are listed as: William C., Virginia Robert Mack, Malinda Lydia Blackburn, Jesse, Sarah Jane, George, John, Sarah Jane, Reuben, & Isaiah. No Johnson marriages listed but not all reported. Family members moved westward vaRIOUSLY TO Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, explaining absence for mid-century census, if I recall reporting. The person writing up the Cunninghams who should be consulted is: Mark L. Sinclair, 1402 Richmond Avenue, Apt. 307, Houston, TX 77006-5323. The Cunninghams were from South Carolina via Tennessee. Some children were born there as during first decade of 1800s - fitting the neighborhood pattern.
