    1. Re: [ALJEFF] names in my dads 1930 diary/Train Station
    2. Ah, those wonderful memories ... My uncle used to call out the trains at the Southern Railway station. We used to ride the train to TN and other parts of our great country and I really loved seeing the marvelous countryside go by. You had to have a certain "knack" to do his particular job. The old train station: I loved the marble floors, it's huge dome. The same architect built one almost exactly like it in St Louis, BUT they chose to immortalize it by turning it into a tourist attraction, also a hotel of sorts and many stores. Making a fortune from it. Ours went to rubble and who knows what happened to the beautiful marble all in it, or to the wonderful stone from which it was built. Heavy Sigh !!! I have an article written about my uncle that was in the Birmingham news, also have a photo of him in his SR cap. The article starts off with ALL Abooaaarrrd. I had heard him call that out many times. Even went to his little work cubby-hole with my aunt to take him his lunch/supper depending on the shift he was working. Thanks Delilah for dredging up so many wonderful memories for all of us. How wonderful for you to have your father's diary. What a benevolent thing for you to do to share it with us too. My brother-in-law is a VP at the Alabama Theater. My cousin was here doing family research (she is from Australia, father with the Blount Co roots went to Australia in WW ll and met her lovely mother, married her, and stayed there). I took her down to the theater and he gave her a personal tour. We both had a wonderful time!! PS: The pipe organ's name is: Big Bertha. PSS: List Admin. Please do not fuss at us too much for all this nostaligia. After all it is, "history". History is memories, and "memoirs" have made many a person famous! Perhaps it is also that the holiday season is upon us and we are all waxing nostalgic for those ancestors/relatives no longer among us with whom we used to celebrate the holidays. They also used to tell us about the holidays of their youth and from that we have all hopefully gleaned many a clue on some of those elusive ancestors ... Aunt so and so did this, Grandpa so and so did this, and on and on. Judi in Pinson ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    3. All, I love these nostalgia trips. I saved all the emails we passed back and forth when we did this for several days this same time last year. (Most loved it; some didn't.) Being a grandfather now puts everything in a different perspective. I wish my grandchildren could see all those places that were in their heyday in my youth. And thank goodness there are people who are trying to preserve and restore some of those that still exist. But, my grandchildren will develop their own memories. They already have. They love the "new" Zoo. They love the McWane Center. They'll get to see the new domed stadium go up. (Or not.) In any case, they'll have their own memories that they look back on with fondness just as we're doing now. Have a great day! Jim Nix Birmingham, AL

    2. It did have a dome and towers at the ends. Don't know if the dome had glass. Go to this website to see a picture of it and other old depots around the state: _http://www.homestead.com/stagmiesalrailpics/Depots_ (http://www.homestead.com/stagmiesalrailpics/Depots) . I go to Chattanooga a couple of times a year and the station there has a hotel, restaurants and shops. Really neat. Also in Indianapolis, Indiana, Union Station has been turned into a wonderful shopping area with alabaster statues of people of the 20's era (I think it's the 20's)...it's like their spirits lingered. A newboy selling papers, a couple on a bench.... Laura Laura ,it seemed it had a large dome in the top with colored glass but I may have it confused with another.Chattanooga turned their station into a restaurant or it was at one time. ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com

    1. [ALJEFF] AL Marriage Index
    2. Barry Jernigan
    3. Ancestry.com has the Alabama Marriage Index from 1936 to 1969. It's in the "Alabama Marriage Collection" database. Couples aren't listed together but you can search by surname, county and/or date. Click the link to the microfilm image of the marriage index itself. Note the county number (alphabetically in order -- 1 is Autauga County and 67 is Winston County. Jefferson County is 37); the date (sometimes a full date or sometimes just the month and year); volume # and certificate # and then search by the county and date for a match. Sometimes kind of tedious but very often ultimately rewarding. Then, if you wanted, you could order a copy of the marriage license. I thought about the people in that diary from 1930. Perhaps someone might be interested in searching for those names in the marriage index and seeing who they married. Might jog some memories a little more? Just an idea. Also, a little OT -- Ancestry has a similar database for Georgia and Florida marriages. Florida marriages go up to 2001. Those do list the couples if you follow the links to information about the actual certificates and it usually gives women's maiden names as well. I haven't checked out the Georgia marriage database but I will be doing so soon. Also there is a divorce index for Florida (same time frame as the marriage index) and a divorce index for Alabama but I think it's only from 1950 to 1959. I haven't checked it out yet. Anyone know of an online database of marriages for Jefferson County for the early 1900s? Prior to 1936? Several of my great aunts and uncles married there during that time frame as well as my great-grandparents. I'm going to have to make Birmingham my next research trip. I've already got one to Cullman Co under my belt and it was a very good learning trip. One of those trips where once you get there you wish you could just go off by yourself and spend hours and hours just digging through everything rather than sticking to some pre-arranged itinerary ;-) Especially in the court house and also in the library.
