You had to have a certain "knack" to do his particular job. The old train station: I loved the marble floors, it's huge dome. The same architect built one almost exactly like it in St Louis, BUT they chose to immortalize it by turning it into a tourist attraction, also a hotel of sorts and many stores. Making a fortune from it. Ours went to rubble and who knows what happened to the beautiful marble all in it, or to the wonderful stone from which it was built. Heavy Sigh !!! I have an article written about my uncle that was in the Birmingham news, also have a photo of him in his SR cap. The article starts off with ALL Abooaaarrrd. I had heard him call that out many times. Even went to his little work cubby-hole with my aunt to take him his lunch/supper depending on the shift he was working. Thanks Delilah for dredging up so many wonderful memories for all of us. How wonderful for you to have your father's diary. What a benevolent thing for you to do to share it with us too. My brother-in-law is a VP at the Alabama Theater. 3. Barry, My Aunt-in-law, Armie (Allred) Erwin was one of the numerous Cullman County Allreds (out of Randolph County, N. C.) who go back to a Revolutionary War veteran who settled there. Also, my friend David Crider's family is Cullman County. Did you see the Cullman newspapers online (Ancestry, I guess) full of local names in the 20th century)? Bill Erwin -----Original Message----- From: aljeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aljeffer-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barry Jernigan Sent: Thursday, November 08, 2007 11:18 PM To: aljeffer@rootsweb.com Subject: [ALJEFF] AL Marriage Index Ancestry.com has the Alabama Marriage Index from 1936 to 1969. It's in the "Alabama Marriage Collection" database. Couples aren't listed together but you can search by surname, county and/or date. Click the link to the microfilm image of the marriage index itself. Note the county number (alphabetically in order -- 1 is Autauga County and 67 is Winston County. Jefferson County is 37); the date (sometimes a full date or sometimes just the month and year); volume # and certificate # and then search by the county and date for a match. Sometimes kind of tedious but very often ultimately rewarding. Then, if you wanted, you could order a copy of the marriage license. I thought about the people in that diary from 1930. Perhaps someone might be interested in searching for those names in the marriage index and seeing who they married. Might jog some memories a little more? Just an idea. Also, a little OT -- Ancestry has a similar database for Georgia and Florida marriages. Florida marriages go up to 2001. Those do list the couples if you follow the links to information about the actual certificates and it usually gives women's maiden names as well. I haven't checked out the Georgia marriage database but I will be doing so soon. Also there is a divorce index for Florida (same time frame as the marriage index) and a divorce index for Alabama but I think it's only from 1950 to 1959. I haven't checked it out yet. Anyone know of an online database of marriages for Jefferson County for the early 1900s? Prior to 1936? Several of my great aunts and uncles married there during that time frame as well as my great-grandparents. I'm going to have to make Birmingham my next research trip. I've already got one to Cullman Co under my belt and it was a very good learning trip. One of those trips where once you get there you wish you could just go off by yourself and spend hours and hours just digging through everything rather than sticking to some pre-arranged itinerary ;-) Especially in the court house and also in the library. The Terminal Station always made me think of something from the Southwest. My streetcar and trolly bus, No. 22, Boyles Tarrant, went right by it. In 1957 I first used the Terminal Station for the first time, my first ride on the "Southerner" traveling to Durham,N. C., where I remain. 3. I hate to say that I don't remember which ones it was. I noticed a blurb about one recently (the Carver?) that was being looked at for renovation. Also, I saw that there was some renovation going on in Woodlawn. There are some great buildings still there that need to be saved. (That was my neighborhood. I remember going to the Krystal, the 5&10, the Rexall drug store, Nick's [which sold comic books], Hill's Grocery, and other places which were already old by the 50's.) Even the neighborhood where I grew up is starting to be revived. We lived in a Craftsman style home in Woodlawn Highlands that was built almost 100 years ago. Back then, it was just "old." Now it's a "classic." 3. I didn't mention in my last email - for those who haven't been to Birmingham in a long time - that Vulcan has been restored along with his original pedestal (but with an elevator added). The Alabama Theater was restored a number of years ago and hosts a variety of events every year. (And my grandchildren have been to those, so those experiences will be theirs also.) No terminal Station, sadly, but I guess that was inevitable with the demise of train travel. Also, there's a move afoot to restore one or more of the other old theaters downtown. 3. Peggy, The movie "A Christmas Story" (Ralphie and his quest for a BB gun...) has a scene where the family is looking through a department store window at a Christmas display. It is so much like what we used to see in the old Loveman's window. The inside of the store even looks like Loveman's. That movie is such a great nostalgia trip itself. It's set in Cleveland in the late 40's, which makes it right about the time we're all remembering. I always enjoy it just for a chance to relive a lot of memories from my childhood. (My dad bought me a BB gun. I didn't shoot my eye out, but I did shoot my brother. I got it for that!)
