I was told that Birmingham, AL was in the state of Mississippi in the year 1800. Do you know if this is true? How could I find out? If you happen to know, do you know what county it was in? Thanks
Apparently I have lost the posting concerning the Jefferson Co. Heritage Book. Would some kind soul please tell me where to submit articles and how to order a copy. Thanks Ted
Someone posted some info on the Jefferson Co. Heritage Book project (such as submission info, etc.) and I seem to have misplaced the info. Would someone please resend me the info? Thanks! Angela
Response to the list of Rogers included in the 1850 census...... posted by PBoger8564@aol.com With many thanks. Hello, It was great to see your Rogers listing, but sadly, I'm still not sure if one of the families listed are the right ones. The last solid name and date (1880 census) I have for the family I am seeking is Thomas J. Rogers b. August 1856, Alabama. His father was listed as J. Rogers and he was born in SC. Thomas J. Rogers married Susan E. ?? letsome, letson, lehoon, ledford??? ( I can't read the name on the marriage lines) in Birmingham, AL., Nov. 16th, 1876. Susan E. was born in Georgia March 1861. I would be delighted if any one recognized these names and dates and could help me. I need to have some dates, places, names, etc. before I can hope to trace these people into South Carolina and Georgia. I hope to hear from someone. thank you . Heather Rogers

Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of orphanages from the late 1800's to early 1900's in operation in Jefferson Co., AL? Phoebe
Patricia, Thanks for your most generous offer. Could you check for me on a Thomas Jefferson Rodgers, b in (we think) Jefferson Co, AL Sept 12, 1845. All I know of his parents is that his children called their grandfather "Greff". He named his oldest son John F, so I wonder whether Thomas' father was perhaps a John Griffin Rodgers? I hope you can find Thomas , and maybe it would show his siblings. Thanks in advance. Sarah McLemore
Hello list, I need a little help in finding C. PEACHER, in the 1920 JEFFERSON CO., AL. census. Thanks, Jennie

Is there an inventory of this cemetery, tombstones, etc. available? A lot of my kin are probably buried there, and it's a long way from west Texas. Thanks for reading. Tom
Would anyone have ever heard of a company named Simpson Richey Co, Box 742 Birmingham, Ala back in the 1930"s? Phoebe
I've been on this list for sometime now & haven't seen a CURRYS mentioned yet. Isn't there some poor soul out there trying to making a CURRY connection like I am? Earliest I can trace my line in Ala. is 1822. Most of mine left Ala. for better jobs in Tx. around turn of century. BG PIPER (Tx.)

Mr. and Mrs. Farrell ran the Birmingham City Jail 1918-1920 at least. B.M. Allen was an attorney who became a judge and represented at least two African American soldiers during the same period. Erle Pettus was U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District and Edgar C. Caldwell was in the jail from 1919-1920. In a letter he wrote to the NAACP in 1920, he speaks of his wife Tressie Ford Caldwell and the kindness of the Farrells.Tressie disappears after 1920 and it appears she did not return to live in Atlanta after Edgar's death. I suspect she remained in the Birmingham area. Do any of these names ring a bell for members of the list? Thank you. Sharon K. I am researching my husband's grandparents who were living in the Dekalb area of Bowie County, TX, when they died (we believe). Parker T. Burns born 1876 in Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL died between 1910-1920 His wife, Melinda J. Smith Burns born March 1875 in AR died between 1910-1920 When they died(?), sometime between 1910 and 1920, they left three daughters and two sons, all young. The three girls were placed in the Methodist orphanage in Waco. The youngest son, Arie Lee, was given to the William Wisdom family who appear in the 1920 census in Collingsworth County, TX. None of the children are now living. There was some reluctance on my father-in-law's (Arie's) part to discuss his parents so there may be some story other than his parents' death. If anyone has any information regarding this family, I would appreciate the help! Thanks so much! Judy Oklahoma City

They were married abt 1835, probably in KY. As for Nicholas, I don't have any information as of yet. Thanks for any help you may provide. Carla
