    3. Hi Jenny, I lived there all my life too until about 5 years ago. There was a city or county run home for wayward teens at Gate City. I can just see the entrance and I could probably get there given enough time. It was something else before it was the home for teens, but I can't remember exactly what. Here's a map from the GNIS database showing it on a map. http://mapping.usgs.gov:8888/gnis/owa/MapServer?f_name=Gate+City&f_state=AL&f_latlong=333252N0864336W&f_type=ppl&server=TIGER Alice Wrenest25@aol.com wrote: > Hi > I am from Bham and lived there most of my life and I was racking my brain > trying to think of something that could have been Tate City,I think the > person that said that it might be a typo was correct. > > Jenny

    1. [ALJEFFER] Re:WILLIAM CURRY
    2. I am trying to determine which William Curry who served in Civil War is my GG Grandfather. Only info I have is that his wife was named Mary. And he is believed to have been killed (or deserted???) during CW. Here's the only info I have to go on: B. c. 1822, South Carolina M. c. 1848-51 in Ga. or Ala. (Found record of 2-19-1851 in Talladega Co., Ala. that could possibly be him.) D. after 1860 is all I can determine. Four children: WILLIAM EDWARD, b. 1/12/1850 in Ga., m. WINNIE JANE OSBORNE 11-8-1871, Blount Co., Ala., no DOD. MARY E.T., b. c. 1855, m. (1) Wm. T. CARPENTER (no date) and (2) ARCHIBALD MOORE 12/10/1875 in Blount Co., Ala. A "David Thompson" co-signed the marriage bond.. no DOD for her. JOHNATHAN WASHINGTON, b. 6-22-1857, Ga., m. CAROLINE TYLER 7/23/1879 Blount Co., Ala., d. 11/16/1939 Tx. THOMAS A., b. 5/1860. No m. or DOD. NFI found anywhere. I know the 1860 Census of Carroll Co., Ga. is him: 38 yrs.old, m. to a "Mary" age 34, with the 4 kids above, making his DOB c. 1822 and hers c. 1826. Can anybody piece these facts together and help me figure out where to go from here?? BG PIPER

    3. Michael, I have an 1847 map of Al and have not been able to find Cowega-there is a Cowikee in Barbour County. Fort Mitchell is a river in Russell County that empties into the Chattahootche on the Ga border. Elyton is in Jefferson County and, if you have ever been to Legion Field, you were in what was once Elyton. During the CW Elyton was a mfg town and was destroyed by the Union under Gen Wilson(no relation <g>). If you need more info, let me know, E. D.

    3. Michael, I have never heard of Cowega or Ft. Mitchell, but I can confirm that Elyton is in the western section of Birmingham. At one time,I understand it was a town of it's own. In 1910, Elyton became a suburb of the city of Birmingham. You may try the Birmingham City Library. They have much info on all of Alabama. They have all of the census records & City Directories. The directories can be of great help in finding addresses & occupations. My wife & I go to the Birmingham Library from time to time. I would be happy to see what info they may have. Send me your email address & I will be glad to try & help. 3. I had posted a query several weeks ago about George Wilson REESE, DDS. I sent $10 for an AL death certificate and received back "A Failure to Find Certificate" My question is this: do the vital records people only search Jefferson Co, or do they try surrounding counties. Dr. Reese was suppose to have practiced in Birmingham, but could he have had his home in a surrounding county and what would those counties be? Were there medical/dental licenses then? Any suggestions to get this man connected to his father? Can anybody do a census lookup for me for 1900, 1910 and possibly best 1920. His wife was Katherine WILEY and his son was Eldridge REESE who went to a Tenessee military school and would not have been at home during the 1920 census. I appreciate any help and/or lookups. 3. Hi Helen, I did a Yellow Pages search and couldn't find either the cemetery or the church. The Geographic Names Information System also could't find either the cemetery or the church. I'd suggest contacting a funeral home in Pinson. (There should know where the cemeteries are. And if any cemetery names have changed.) Or a Baptist church in Pinson. (They should know where the other Baptist churches are. And if any Baptist church has changed its name.) 1. [ALJEFFER] COUCH family
    2. Michael A. Landwehr
    3. Hi all, I'm looking for a COUCH family who may have lived in Jefferson County about 1835-1840. Moses COUCH left Madison County, Illinois, about 1835. We don't know where he went after leaving Illinois. Moses Couch had lived in Alabama earlier in his life (around Madison County about 1818-1821). He may have moved back to Alabama about 1835. My suspicion that Moses Couch moved back to Alabama is based on the following facts: Moses Couch had a son, Benjamin Couch, who served in the Creek War, or Florida War, about 1835 or 1836. Benjamin served as a Private in the company commanded by Captain James McAdory, in the 1st Battlion, 4th Regiment, Alabama Mounted Volunteers, commanded by Lt. Colonel McMillion (McMilan/McMillan). In her application for a widow's pension, Benjamin Couch's widow would later report that Benjamin enlisted at Eliton, in 1835, and was discharged at Montgomery, Alabama. I have not been able to find any references to a place called Eliton, but there was apparently an Alabama settlement named Elyton. Based on the research I've been able to do so far, it appears that Birmingham replaced Elyton as the Jefferson County seat in 1873, and that Elyton is now part of the western section of Birmingham. A Treasury Department record indicated that Benjamin enrolled on June 12, 1836 at Cowaga, Alabama, and was discharged at Montgomery with his Company on July 21, 1836. It went on to state that Benjamin was paid from June 12 to July 19, for one month and 19 days, including ten days travel--100 miles to place of rendezvous, and 100 miles from place of discharge home. A record returned to the Commissioner of Pensions by the War Department indicated that Benjamin was enrolled, and mustered in, on June 19, 1836, 18 miles from Ft. Mitchell, Alabama, and was mustered out with his Company on July 21, 1836 at Montgomery, Alabama. I haven't been able to determine where Cowega was, but Ft. Mitchell is apparently on the Alabama-Georgia border, about 70 miles due east of Montgomery, and about 140 miles southeast of the site of Elyton, Alabama. My suspicion is that Moses Couch, and possibly other members of this Couch family, lived in the Elyton area around 1835-1840. Can anyone on the list help me determine what records exist that might help determine what Couch families, if any, were in Jefferson County during this time period. Are Jefferson County land records available for this time period? Are there any tax lists for this period? Can anyone confirm where Elyton/Eliton was located? Does anyone know where Cowega was located? Does anyone know anything about Captain James McAdory's company in the Florida War? Any help would be sincerely appreciated. Holiday Greetings, Mike Landwehr
