    3. Hi, We have been doing Genealogy research for a number of years and we have yet to come up with a good, efficient, and space saving system of storing information so that we can quickly return to a particular research report. So many times, we are not sure if a person is in our line, so we keep the information for future use. Later a lot of time is spent looking for that information to no avail. Would someone out there have a good system that they would be willing to recommend we use. We thank you in advance for your help. Dorothy Durden

    1. [ALJEFFER] Time has almost run out -- HERITAGE OF JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL book
    2. Hi folks, Yes, the deadline for submitting articles for the Heritage of Jefferson County, Alabama is just days away. Several of you have written asking for confirmation as to the final deadline. It is this coming Tuesday, February 29, 2000. PLEASE, if you have been intending to get around to including your family in this book, do not delay any longer. Once the book articles are sent to the publisher, the content is "set" and there is nothing any of us can do to get additional information included. This opportunity will be gone. The book committee hopes to have a wonderful cross-section of who we are and were -- but we are dependent on YOU to get that information to us. If you have a friend or relative who has expressed interest, the book committee needs you to please let them know also. Also, it would be nice if some of you have time and could offer to help some of our older citizens who need assistance with writing and getting their families and memories included. Remember, special writing ability is NOT a requirement -- just write about yourself, or others, as you would write to another family member. You are writing for the future, and future readers want to know about you, your family, interests, hobbies, and OUR times as well as times past. It is true that time is very short but it is hoped that with the weekend coming up, any loose ends can be tied up and you will find time to get your stories and family histories on paper. Please have your submittals postmarked by Tuesday, February 29. If, for some reason, you are not familiar with the Heritage Series, please email me and I will email back full details. There is NO COST and NO OBLIGATION to record your family, with past or present connections, to Jefferson County. Mailing address for submitting articles is shown below. The same address is also the one to use for ordering book(s) at the special prepublication sales price of $59 ($50 + $4 tax + $5 shipping and handling). By the way, for the Jefferson County book, those ordering now can have their name imprinted on the cover, in gold, for $5 additional ($64 total). The name imprint is only possible for those ordering in advance of publication as it is done at the plant where the books are printed. Mail articles and/or orders to: Jefferson County Heritage Book Committee P. O. Box 190034 Birmingham, AL 35219 For additional information, my email address: PDietlein@aol.com Please allow me a personal note here. So many of you have written, even joined us at meetings -- and, in addition to receiving your articles, new research avenues have been opened, AND, most meaningful, new friends made. I truly appreciate the opportunity that has been given to me to work with and get to know so many of you. I look forward to seeing you all IN THE BOOK!! Sincerely, Patricia C. Dietlein, Family Coordinator Jefferson County Heritage Book Committee

    1. [ALJEFFER] Holtzclaw
    2. Larry Williamson
    3. Hello, I am new to the list. I don't really have research in Jefferson County, but I have information I wanted to run past someone in case it is not known. I subscribed for 2 reasons: 1- In my main research county (Watauga, NC) there is a book about the early history of the county that was published in 1915. In that book it gives lots of family information and links a lot of the families with the areas where some of them moved. Last night I saw that a Joseph Holtzclaw had moved "to Alabama and settled near what is now Birmingham." This would have been early 1800s. Didn't know if someone is researching this family. If the census records suport that statement, there is more information to be had about this Joseph's parents that goes back to about 1740. Anyone interested can contact me privately ( P_L_Williamson@att.net ). 2- I know there is a Jefferson Heritage Book in the works. We lived in north Bibb county, (my husband's home) for several years. Ever since I have been into genealogy over the past few years there is a small deserted cemetery in Jefferson county that often comes to mind. It was by the road and in the woods. As you leave Bessemer on Hwy 150 and go under a bridge (train or car? - can't remember, but think train) there is a road that turns off to the left and goes toward Shannon (If memory serves me correctly, this is the road that eventulally goes by the landfill) It starts out curvy (or did 10 years ago - haven't been there for a while) and winds up a hill. BEFORE you reach the top, over to the right of the road are/were several old tombstones in the woods, very close to the road. It seems those might be important to someone's research. I haven't been able to find anything on a list that I knew was that cemetery. Thought someone might want to know these things. Sharon Williamson
