Regardless of how we change or leave as-is the 'reply' option, I'd still like to see the suggestions on a filing system. I'm covered with paper and need a way to organize it quick! Alice Campbell

I have the opportunity to visit the Birmingham Library soon. Do they have a genealogical section? Is it worth the trip? What can I expect to find there? Thanks for your help. -- Dianne

This maillist was originally configured for replies to go directly to the list. However, after some messages were sent to the list by accident that were NOT MEANT to be sent 'public' (a couple being a little embarrassing) I had several requests that I reconfigure the mail so that when you hit 'reply' the answer goes only to the individual. However, if the concensus is NOW that we change it so that when you hit "reply" that it goes to the entire list, it makes no difference to me, and I will be happy to change it back. I want to do whatever works best for everyone. Anyone with thoughts or feelings on this please make them known, either here to the list, or if you prefer you can email me privately at: william3@hiwaay.net This list was from its inception established solely to help people connect with others doing similar genealogical research, and I am always happy to handle matters that affect the list however the group as a whole prefers. BTW, I am VERY glad Pat brought this up. If anyone else has issues like this that need to be addressed, please please don't hesitate to list them here or email me personally. If you have a problem, others probably have it too and it can only get fixed if someone speaks up. Hello, I am trying to locate a lady named Pat BROWN, of Ashville, Al. I am helping a friend with their genealogy. He was told that this lady is also doing research on the same line. Does anyone know of how I could get in touch with her? I have tried the phone book and had no luck. If you are online please contact me. Thanks for any help. Debbie Bein ICQ#13139983 Surnames: CARDWELL, WHITE, DAVIS, WALKER, MORGAN, McDONALD, KELLY. My husbands line: BEIN, CALDWELL, SPOHR, NOLAN. Can some one look up the names of the Bowen's, Armstrong, Craft, and Gaddis and give me the names. This is Jefferson Co. Thanks Peggy psueg@bellsouth.net
I see by Dorothy's comment that she has received responses to her query privately, not through the list. This question arises: Is this a person-to-person list or a public list? My reason for joining a list is to learn from others. How can I gain any incidental learning if replies to other people's queries never show up on the public list? If replies are largely personal, then the list is not nearly as useful to me as it might be. It also tempts me to be a poor list citizen -- I can join temporarily if I have a specific question, but I don't need to hang around and contribute to the common effort. Are people consciously choosing to reply just to the person who posts the query, or is it happening that way because, when you hit the REPLY key to send a response, it is the query-asker's address, not the list's, that automatically appears in the TO window and you don't think to copy the list's address into that spot? If this is the case, the system needs to be reprogrammed so that the list's address is the one that automatically appears as the recipient of a reply message. I think we should generally be responding to the list, not to individuals. Does any one have a index book for the death of Jefferson Co. I need the information on William Lucallen Gaddis, Born in June 1865 and died May 2, 1943. He was living in Leeds at the time of death, and is buried at the Shiloh Church Cemetery in Leeds. Thanks for all of your help. Peggy psueg@bellsouth.net
I don't know, when I hit reply it goes to the list. Do different ISP's do different things? I prefer all responses go through the list. On aol, if you hit "reply", it will go to the individual. If you hit "reply all", it will go to the individual and the list. One surname list that I am on has an individual who contacts you personally and offers to sell family data that he has. No, I did not accept the offer. Barbara
The Lynn-Henley Research Library (which is in downtown Birmingham and connected to the Jeff Co. Library by a bridge over the street) is one of the FINEST genelogical research libraries anywhere! The bottom floor (with more area than many complete libraries have) has books from all over the country. Then on the next floor there is a microlfim room with census records (from most of the country) Newspapers, military records.... You might want to do a search on the net (and let us know here if you find the URL). I bet they have a website that could give you a better idea of exactly what all they have. Have fun. Hi Nancy and List, My vote is to leave the reply system "as is." As I understand it, when one hits the "reply all" (as I just did), replies DO go to both the list and to the individual who sent the original post. Perhaps this could be pointed out to new members with their welcoming letter. Also, a reminder that if a subject is of general interest, to make sure the list gets the benefit of that information also. Most people have a pretty good feel of what is appropriate for the list as a whole and what requires an individual reply. Even with the system as it is, there are sometimes replies that are of virtually no benefit to the list as a whole and just someone's offhand comment or "knee-jerk" response to a topic. Many of us are on several lists and even using the "delete" key can be very time consuming. Many list members probably have had the experience with other lists of seeing innumerable "Happy Birthday" or "Good Luck" messages which should properly be sent personally. The messages that comes across as somewhat personal in nature also often tend to lead to controversial opinions being aired with the resulting mini-flame wars -- before the list owner can step in and extinguish them. It has been a pleasure to know that when something comes across the ALJEFFER-L, usually it IS intended for all of us. Thanks to Nancy for being so open to our needs and allowing the membership to express opinions about this. AND for all she does to keep things running so smoothly enabling us to share and learn. Pat
I was also hoping to see some good filing ideas. How about posting some of those great ideas to the list. Helen
The Birmingham Library also has free gated parking with a guard at the entrance. If the weather is bad you can go through the new part of the library up to the third floor I believe and cross over to the microfilm and Southern History part. Otherwise you can walk from the parking lot across 20th street. The entrance faces the park. I agree that they have a fine collection. They are open late on Monday and Tuesday and close about 6 PM other days. They also have a large periodical room with PERSI and a great selection of the periodicals. The catalog search online will save you quite a bit of time using the catalog at the library. The catalog is on line: http://www.bham.lib.al.us/departments/Southern/Gene.htm Good luck on your search. Carolyn
Hi, We wish to thank everyone for there thoughtful suggestions on filing genealogy research reports and names and to those persons that asked for copies of the results, we will, after review, forward them to you. Thanks so much, Dorothy Durden
