Peggy, The story submissions are still being processed. They will go to the publisher, then back to the committee for more work, then back to the publisher. It is my understanding that they are hoping to get it out in time for Christmas. But they said if it is not out by Christmas, they will give certificates to those who ordered them to give as gifts for Christmas. Hope this helps, Melba -----Original Message----- From: Peggy Sue Gaddis <psueg@bellsouth.net> To: ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com <ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, May 02, 2000 9:19 AM Subject: [ALJEFFER] Fw: Heritage Book >I have not heard from any one on this. >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Peggy Sue Gaddis" <psueg@bellsouth.net> >To: <ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> >Sent: Monday, May 01, 2000 12:00 PM >Subject: Heritage Book > > >> When will the Heritage Book for Jefferson be out.?? When will the Heritage Book for Jefferson be out.?? When will they be sent out for the ones of us whom have already prepaid for them? Peggy
Hello All, I need your help. I am looking for my gg-grandparents William WADE and his wife Catharine CRAIG both b. abt. 1836 AL. William was the son of Woodson WADE and Nancy BURFORD. Woodson was a long standing resident of Jefferson Co. Catharine CRAIG was the d. of Leonard CRAIG and Nancy ?. William and Catharine m. in 1855 in Marshall Co, AL. Had son James WADE b. abt. 1856. All three appear together on the 1860 Marshall Co AL census. In 1863 William joined the 12th Alabama Cavalry, Co E at Blue Springs, AL. I cannot find William or Catharine after that point. Their son James appears on the 1870 Marshall Co AL census with his grandmother Nancy CRAIG. I have a copy of William's service records (1 page, I assume it's complete) but it sheds no light. Any suggestions/help would be very, very appreciated. Eldon Wade ewade@cfl.rr.com
Dear Diane, I would really appreciate it if you would contact me if you have any success finding this grave. I am also looking for the site of my grandfather's grave. We know the cemetery - just don't know the location of his grave. He is buried in S.C. God Bless Barbara
James, What time period was it that they lived there? The Birmingham Public Library has city directories for several years. They give the address of all who lived in Birmingham the year of the directory. One of my ancestors is buried at the Union Grove Cemetery in Adamsville, Alabama. There is no marker on his grave, and the current caretaker of the cemetery only "thinks" she knows which plot is his. Is there anyway of knowing for sure WHERE in that cemetery my great grandfather is buried? The caretaker doesn't seem to have any records or grid or anything which shows who is buried where. He died in 1939. -- Dianne
Does anyone know of or have information on a section of B'ham that I am trying to locate. All I have is childhood memories of the location. It is where my grandmother's house was located. I do not have the street name or any other landmark except that the street was a deadend street and it was on a hill with my grandmother's house sitting at the end of it. There was a dairy farm across from the valley from her house. Also her house was near the black shanty town. When I say near we could see it from her front porch. On the other side of the street was a woods. I know this is scant information but it is all I have. Maybe it will jar some memories lose. I can also remember my uncle taking us up on red mountain to see the stature of Vulcan. But that is not relevant unless you are a decendant of my grandparents. Thank You
I have kind of an unusual request.... I am trying to find the source or book about Jefferson Co (Methodism?) from Jefferson Co......this source turns out to be extremely important as this page mentions vital information about my line. The person who sent me this page says they did not document from which book this was taken. She thought is was "something about Old Settlers" found in the Birmingham Library. The the top center of the page...says "6"........ in the upper right hand side of the page says "200-A" ....it starts off.....(at the top of the page) "and sheep to Ruhama, above Elyton on the old Georgia dirt road; here they built a substantial blockhouse for securing against roving banks of the remnants of Indians who still remained and hunted in that section." it ends with (last part of page) "resisted their power to cut it with chisels and hammer; powder to blast it out could only be obtained in small quatities by conveyance on pack-horses over the military trail from middle Tennessee, and dynamite was an explosive sub-" I have searched several libraries where I live, but have not found this book...... THANKS in advance to anyone who may help!!! Clark Sinclair Houston
My father and his two brothers grew up in the Powhatan Mining Camp. If anyone has any pictures of the old mining camp in the 30's and could supply jpeg's of these pictures that would be great. Or if maybe someone knew where I could find such pictures. Thanks, Don Hogan
Okiciya, But she was the ORIGINAL owner. She got it from the government on the Military Act of 1850 for her husband's service in the War of 1812. Only the original owners are on the Tract book that I was referring to. The list (from BLM) that I sent included ALL of the property in that section EXCEPT hers. I just found that to be strange. Other people tell me that they have found persons with land from Military acts on the BLM. What is the terraserver site? Is there a URL for it? Thanks, Melba -----Original Message----- From: redwitch <redwitch@earthlink.net> To: Melba J Clark <melba.clark@gte.net> Date: Sunday, April 23, 2000 12:03 PM Subject: Re: [ALJEFFER] Question Melba, I could be wrong but read somewhere (I believe on the BLM site) that the first transfer of the land, ie., from government to individual, is the only thing on the BLM site. Further transfers are not available through BLM. If an individual sold her the property after he/she purchased it from the government, it may not be listed. I have the same problem...a gg grandfather purchased land, then sold, and bought other property. Only the first transaction (government to individual) is on the BLM site. Sent to the National Archives for the forms for ordering the whole file but don't know if it will reveal anything further. There may be a way to locate further information at the BLM site, but I haven't been able to find it. Had a professor at college tell me about the terraserver site. You can locate the exact area the property is in and get an overview of the county, state, etc. Noticed that you have the tract book so may not need it but the site is interesting also. If you find out some way of getting further info on a piece of land, would love to see it posted.
