My greatgrandmother was M. Ann Caldwell, born December 25, 1850 in Georgia, married Jesse Landrum Gravat (Gravitt) December 27, 1877 in Jefferson County Alabama. She died September 1918 in Morgan County and is buried there at Johnson's Chapel Cemetary. I have searched for years for some information on her parents and siblings, but so far have found very little. She supposedly had a sister named Francis E. (1855-1911) who married Thomas P. McDonald. One of their daughters, Georgia married John Allen Daniel. From the book, "A History of Neel Community", Larry Brown writes "sometime in the 1890's a group of Scott-Irish Methodists migrated from Jefferson County to North Alabama....." Supposedly the McDonalds, Glasgows, Bridges, Blacks and Gravits came together from Jefferson County. This group is also supposedly responsible for McDonald's Chapel in Jefferson County. Any information anyone may have on the Caldwell family in Jefferson County would be appreciated. This is just about my last elusive relative and I would dearly love to find out something about them. I reside in Washington State so it's very difficult for me to search files for Jefferson County, very few are online. Thanks, Barbara Hestness barnieh@earthlink.net

Hello, Listers, I need your help on this: In the ALABAMA RECORDS, Jefferson Co., Vol. 112, pages 27-28, transcripts from the court records about the sale of the land of Michael Robbins , dec'd. On the same page is a quote from a letter from Mrs. A.G. Norman in 1956 about the parents of Michael's wife, Mary. The quote is posted below the following questions that I would like anwered if possible. QUESTIONS: 1] Does anyone know the answer to Mrs. Norman's question, "I've wondered which BOYD he was" printed there? 2] Does anyone know about the "biographies of the ROBBINS family in Ala counties" of which she spoke? 3] Or is there any of Mrs. Norman's "collection" as she called it, her research results and/or notes available for study? 4] Who was her aunt (dec'd before 1956) who married a descendant of Michael Robbins ? QUOTE FROM HER LETTER: "I was interested in this: JAMES BOYD, Rev sol. born N.C. 1793, Died, Newton Co. Miss. 1853. Had lived in Jefferson and other Ala counties. Moved to Kemper Co, Miss. 1833. In biographies of the ROBBINS family in Ala., they say MICHAEL ROBBINS--in Ala. 1820--married MARY BOYD in S.C., the daughter of a Rev Soldier, who lived in Jefferson Co Ala . I've wondered which BOYD he was, My aunt, who married a descendant of that MICAHEL ROBBINS, died, and her children seem not interested in their ancestors, but I'd like to know about them for my own collection (From Mrs. A.G. Norman, Birmingham, Ala. Feb. 1956)" END OF QUOTE ONE MORE QUESTION: James and Sarah Sloan Boyd have been stated by many researchers as Mary's parents for quite some time. Is there ANY documentation for this asumption? Thanks, Melba
My grandparents, Willard Herndon Whittington and Ella Cordell Lee, were married on October 6, 1930. At the time, both lived in Mississippi. Cordell was 15; Willard was 22. Cordell's mother had remarried after her first husband (Cordell's father) had died. She and her second husband had moved to Alabama, and Cordell was living with her maternal grandparents. Her grandfather would not give Cordell permission to marry Willard; she was too young and he was too old. So, Cordell and Willard drove to Alabama to get her mother's permission to marry. It was given, and they were married there. My grandparents had been married for 57 years when my grandmother passed away. My grandfather passed away last year. My problem is that no one knows exactly where in Alabama they were married! A couple of distant relatives seem to recall that it was Birmingham, but, bless their hearts, both of these ladies are in their 90's. I would like to have some confirmation before I send off for a copy of a record, only to find that there is no record there. I have already tried Alabama Vital Statistics, and ALDAH. Now I'm praying that someone has access to the marriage records at the Jefferson County courthouse, and will be willing to check them out for Willard and Cordell. Thanks so much for reading this, and bless you if you can help! Sharon
Jackie, I understand your questioning the time involved. I thought the same thing when I ordered a my first book from another county. That was before I saw a little of what was involved in the putting together of the books. Remember that the work is being done be unpaid-volunteers!!!! The submission deadline had been extended to March 31. There is an incredible number of stories submitted. There is a lot of time and work involved in processing them both before and after submission to the publisher. They have to be proofed, photos taged, numbered, etc and all kinds of things to ensure that the correct photos are with their story, and returned to the proper person. This is just part of what I have seen. Other counties books took quite a while to process and print. i believe that the Jefferson Co. book is pretty much "on schedule" Melba -----Original Message----- From: Jacqueline Satterfield <satterfieldj@hotmail.com> To: melba.clark@gte.net <melba.clark@gte.net> Date: Wednesday, May 03, 2000 2:04 AM Subject: Re: [ALJEFFER] Fw: Heritage Book > >Hi Melba, > >it was my understanding this was supposed to be out mid-summer - I currently >live overseas and expect to be moving around Christmas time!!
