I have been unable to find any information about obituaries or early death records. Does any one know whether there were any local newspapers in Jefferson County which included obituaries or death records in the paper. I waited 2 years for microfilmed Birmingham paper (circa 1899) only to find that it didn't contain any obituaries. The time frame in which I am looking is 1899, 1914 and 1915. Later, I obtained the microfilmed statewide death index circa 1906 - 1916 hoping to find death records for William Isaac and Margaret (Franklin) Harris. Unfortunately, the deaths apparently weren't registered. Does anyone know about when the laws were put into effect or if there were any small community newspapers that may have published local information. Kristina Harris
Hi... I'm looking for information on Adam Odum Crane and Mary Jane Armstrong. They married in Jefferson Co on 20 Sept 1846. Their 1850 census looked like this: 1850 US Census, Jefferson Co., Alabama page 154 B -155A Mud Creek Beat, District No. 31, Nov 13, 1850 by L. G. McMillion 33-33 Odum CRANE, age 38 born SC - Farmer Mary J., age 25 born AL Mary Jane, age 7 born AL William J., age 4 born AL Nancy S., age 1 born AL As you can tell from the census record the oldest daughter listed was born in 1845 (actually 26 Jan 1845) which was 21 months before this couple was married. Thereforth the mother could have been married before this marriage. Their daughter Mary Jane Crane is my gggm... and I'm looking for someone that can help me solve this mystery. Mary Jane Crane married Leander Franklin Goodwin on 1 Aug 1865 in Jefferson Co. The Goodwins are also from the Mud Creek area. Leander is the son of Joshua Goodwin and Sarah Farrar. I don't know what happened to the two other children. thank you for your help, cay devin devinc@seanet.com
HI, Will someone please look up the dates for Escar and Nancy Wilkins at the Forest Lawn Cemetery?? Thank you very much. Karen Smith
Total speculation but, having grown up shopping at Berger-Phillips in B'ham, wonder if there is a connection with the name Phillipson and the shortening to Phillips. Also, the Cohen being probably German or Jewish or both, as were the owners of many of the fine stores in Birmingham from the late 1800's thru the mid 1900's and even later.Perhaps a check with the Chamber of Commerce or public library would help trace the business. I remember Berger Phillips being off 19th or 20th St. N. on about 2nd to 4th Ave. Caroline in Prattville, AL
Sue: This is my family! Children in 1850 Census are Mary Ann who I believe never married but had two children William Harrison (my ggrandfather) and Sarah. Martha or Patsy who married John Thomas 10 Nov 1853. Tipton who married Mary Roberts 2 Sep 1856 Jane who married William Martin Roberts 2 Oct 1856 Harriet who I think married O Drake Elvina or Elvira who married Thomas Mott 15 Dec 1869 I believe that John Blackburn Campbell who married Caroline McClanhanon in Meigs Co. TN on 21 Jan 1846 is also their child. Look forward to hearing from you. I have a crazy day and will be gone most of it, but I had to e-mail you. YEA! Deon in Idaho
Trying to link up William CAMPBELL and wife Margaret BLACKBURN of Jeff. Co. Tn and Hamilton Co Tenn who came to Jeff. Co. Al. prior to 1850 census. Had ch named Harriett, Houston, Blackburn and others. Other lines were SELF, ALRED, JONES. Sue in Al.
I found a listing for a ROBERT CATES who is listed as a Stonemason, Location 823 14th St. S, in the 1888 Birmingham Directory. I think this may be the second husband of my gggrandmother, Mary Jackson, who had two daughters, Ida and Lillie, by him. I have a photograph of the two girls which has stamped under their picture, "Covell, 1817 1st Avenue, Birmingham, Ala" that they had signed and sent to their half brother, my grandfather. I have not found them on the 1900 Alabama census and will be checking the 1910 census tomorrow, but in the meantime, if anyone has any information on this family, I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks, Peggy Horton Marshall, Tx.
Phobe, If the streets were named the same as currently, the location would be between Downtown Birmingham and the UAB area. The Southern RR divides North and South and the numbers start there and proceed both north and south. 19th Street runs north and south and is on both sides, so there is a 2nd and 3rd both North and South. The Jefferson County Court House is just east of 19th between 7th and 8th Ave North. The UAB Hospital is on between19th and 20th ST and between 6th and 7th Ave South. Both of the 2nd and 3rds would be between these two, a couple of blocks on either side of the RR. Hope this helps, Melba -----Original Message----- From: Phoenixxph@aol.com <Phoenixxph@aol.com> To: ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com <ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, June 14, 2000 8:16 AM Subject: [ALJEFFER] Introduction New Searcher...PHILIPSON >Hello. > >My name is Phoebe and I live in Florida. I never cese to be amazed at how little people understand about publishing. You do not submit material today and expect the book tomorrow. They will be lucky if they get it a year from now after all the proofreading, art work etc. I would say Ignorance, but would prefer to say, "lack of knowledge." jwr.
