Carol, I understand that the Birmingham Public Library's Southern History department has an Obituary file. You may be able to get one from them. They also have city directories going back to well before 1900. The ice company might be in one of them. Hello, I am hoping that someone on this list might be able to help, as I live in VA and don't have easy access to any of the local records. I am searching for information on Arthur Pierce Nelson, b. 1889 in AL, son of Henry Seaborn Nelson and Mary Vianna Morton. He died 20 May 1954 in Birmingham and is buried at Elmwood cemetery. According to family information, he may have owned an ice plant in Birmingham, but I have been unable to confirm this. I do not know any information on his wife or children. I am hoping that if I can find a cousin from this line that I can further my research on the Nelsons. If anyone would be able to do an obituary look-up, I would be glad to pay for copies. Or if anyone has any suggestions for how to find out more about Arthur Nelson's family, I would be grateful. I have contacted the funeral home that handled his arrangements, but they were unable to provide any further information. I feel certain that he still has descendants in the Birmingham area. Thank you, Carol Sixpalz@aol.com

MONTGOMERY, William (1807-1891) SC AL MS also KEEN / KEENE, LEVER, WEEMS I am trying to find information on the ancestry of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY (1807-1891) b. 22 FEB 1807, d. 13 MAY 1891. Conflicting census records indicate that he may have been born in SC, TN, or AL. SC is most likely. He settled permanently in Choctaw Co., MS in 1838 or 1839. On 7 Aug. 1838, he leased 240 acres in Section 16 of Township 17 for 99 years. Section 16 of each township was leased to provide support for the schools. There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone in South Union Cemetery, Choctaw Co., MS. I have unverified information that Williams father was Andrew MONTGOMERY b. Mecklenburg County NC ca. 1785. Andrews father was James MONTGOMERY b. Lancaster County PA ca. 1735/45. James parents were John MONTGOMERY Sr. and Martha ? both born in Ireland and immigrated ca. 1735. My great-great grandmother MONTGOMERY was Martha Ann ? (1816-1888) b. ca. 1816, d. 10 SEP 1888. Conflicting census records indicate that she may have born in SC, GA, or AL. SC is most likely. According to the 1880 Census, her parents were born in SC. Her maiden name was possibly WEEMS. There was a marriage bond for a William MONTGOMERY and Martha WEEMS dated 29 DEC 1833 in Jefferson County AL, but I have no proof that this is my William and Martha. Another clue is the death certificate of the youngest daughter of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY. Her name was Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY MOSS. The death certificate in 1928 lists her mother as Mary W??????. The rest of the maiden name is illegible - maybe Wiemmes. I have found 3 deeds in Jefferson County AL showing the purchase and subsequent sale of land by a William MONTGOMERY and spouse Martha Ann (possibly WEEMS) MONTGOMERY dated between 1833 & 1835. William, Martha and their children were members of New Zion Baptist Church, Choctaw County MS. The children of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY were: Jonathan - b. AL ca. 1834 d. TX 1882, private C.S.A. 1862-1865, spouse Mary Elizabeth RICHARDS b. AL 1834 d. TX 1917, their children - William George. b. MS 1854 d. TX 1924, Emma Jean b. MS ca. 1856, Lou Ella/Louisa b. MS ca. 1858, Martha Ann b. MS ?. Amanda Jane - b. AL (1836-1890), spouse (1) William Eli BLAIN (2) John R. BAYS. Nancy Ann - b. AL (1839-1882), spouse James Wesley BLAIN b. SC, (1832-1864). Elizabeth - b. MS ca. 1840. Anderson S. - b. MS (1842-1862), private C.S.A. 1861-1862 died in captivity St. Louis, MO. Jackson - b. MS ca. 1844. Sarah (Sallie) - b. MS, (1847-1928), spouse (1) Thomas ROBINSON (2) Doc C. MOSS. William Samuel (my great grandfather) - b. MS, (1850-1884), spouse Harriet Elizabeth KEENE b. MS, (1851-1940), their children Martha Elizabeth b. MS (1873-1875), Anna Kate b. MS (1874-1950), spouse Monroe L. McCLURE, James Anderson b. MS (1877-1931) spouse Lela BARRON b. MS 1881, Lovie b. MS (1879-1879), Elizabeth b. MS (1880-1926) spouse James Robert POWER b. MS (1877-1948), Anna Bell b. MS (1881-1884), William Samuel (my grandfather) b. MS (1885-1966), spouse Nena Bertha EVANS b. MONTGOMERY, Andrew (ca. 1780-1860) NC SC AL also DOHERTY/DOUGHERTY, WOODS I am trying to find proof that Andrew MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1785 Mecklenburg County NC d. ca. 1860 Summerfield, Dallas County AL was the father of my great-great grandfather, William MONTGOMERY b. 22 FEB 1807 probably in SC near the NC border d. 13 MAY 1891 Choctaw County MS. William MONTGOMERY may have lived in Jefferson County AL during the 1830s before settling in Choctaw County MS in 1838/39. The only source I have to support this is a pedigree chart from a family history book put together by Emogene Montgomery Black, my second cousin once removed who is probably deceased. She did not cite her sources. The pedigree chart did not list Andrew's wife. Andrew MONTGOMERY was the son of James MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1735/45 Lancaster County PA d. Mecklenburg County NC 1793 and Ann WOODS b. ca. 1753 Lancaster County PA d. Mecklenburg County NC 1793. James MONTGOMERY was the son of John MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1710/15 Northern Ireland d. ca. 1788 Mecklenburg County NC and Martha MONTGOMERY b. ca. 1715/20 Northern Ireland d. ca. 1799 Mecklenburg County NC who immigrated to Lancaster County PA ca. 1735. Andrew MONTGOMERY married Eleanor/Ellen DOHERTY/DOUGHERTY b. ca. 1800 NC. They were married by 1825 when they sold 116 acres inherited from Eleanors father Daniel DOHERTY. Their children all born in NC were: James Newton b. ca. 1828, Samuel W. b. ca. 1829, Mary A.L. b. ca. 1831, Martha J. b. ca. 1833, Sarah R. b. ca. 1835, Hannah A. b. ca. 1837, Ellen S. b. ca. 1839, John A. b. ca. 1841. They all moved to Summerfield, Dallas County AL in 1845. Sources: researcher William Vaughn Montgomery of Selma AL and 1850 Dallas County AL census. Since Eleanor DOHERTY was 15 years younger than Andrew, it is possible that she was his second wife. I am searching for a possible first wife for Andrew who may have been the mother of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY b. 22 FEB 1807 probably in SC near the NC border d. 13 MAY 1891 Choctaw County MS. William lived somewhere in Alabama, possibly Jefferson County during the 1830s before permanently settling in Choctaw County MS ca. 1838/39. Andrews first wife may have also been the mother of 2 additional children, Andrew and John who reportedly went to Texas. Researcher Charlotte M. Brett stated that Andrews sons Andrew, John and William moved to Texas. Andrew MONTGOMERY may have had mental problems. I found a Mecklenburg County NC court order in August 1818 appointing John MONTGOMERY (probably his brother) as guardian for Andrew MONTGOMERY, Insane. It said that Andrew's indisposition of mind was probably due to some kind of "malincholy". No later record has been found removing the guardianship, but it was probably removed by 1825 when Andrew signed a deed. Any leads will be greatly appreciated. I will gladly pay for any postage or photocopying costs and will pass along any new information that I receive.
