    2. Peggy Sue Gaddis
    3. Is any one studying the COOK or the SKELETON Family's.? I have a Dorcas Cook/Skeleton that married a Leroy H. Hodges in August 14, 1879 in Blount Co., Alabama. We believe her madam name was COOK and she had married a Skeleton, then Leroy H. Hodges. We would like to see how much information some one would have on the Hodges Family from the other Family, We are hunting Leroy's parents, and can not find their first names. Any help will be appreciated. We have three children by that marriage. 1. Pamela Susan Hodges married Willis Wingo 1871 2. John Alexander Hodges married Mattie Abbey 1872 3. Robert Austin Hodges married Martha Josephine Pennington 1874 The children might have been born in Jefferson Co., Ala. Some may be buried at the HODGES Cemetery, in Republic, Alabama, Jefferson Co., Alabama. The parents are. Thanks, psueg@bellsouth.net Peggy Sue O'Shields-Gaddis

    3. Mary, Alabama did not become a state until December 14, 1819. In 1817 it became the Alabama Territory. >From AlGenWeb: "Blount County was created by the Alabama Territorial Legislature on February 6, 1818 from land ceded to the Federal Government by the Creek Nation. " and "Jefferson Co was was created by the Alabama legislature on Dec. 13, 1819 . It was carved out of Blount County." Look at: http://www.archives.state.al.us/timeline/timefr.html for a timeline for Alabama. It is part of the site: Alabama General Historical Information at http://www.archives.state.al.us/geninfo.html For lots of links for information about Alabama see AlGenWeb at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~algenweb/ At the Bureau of Land Management site I found the following: There are some Morgans in Blount Co. Calvin C bought land federal land in 1821, Luther in 1824 and S. D. in 1826. These dates are for the final certificate at the final closing. They probably are on the Tract Book a little earlier. There were no Deatons who bought federal lands in Blount Co. But there was a James Deaton who bought federal land 1823 in Jefferson Co., AL. and a Thomas in 1837. The earliest Morgan buying land in Jefferson Co. through the federal sales is David in 1858. You can check there for details such as exact locations, etc. The URL is http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/default.asp. You may also want to check purchases made in both counties from individuals since these aren't listed on the BLM records. Hope this helps, Melba -----Original Message----- From: Chip Russ <chipruss@dfsi.net> To: ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com <ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 1:36 PM Subject: [ALJEFFER] Clear up early Jefferson Co. 1. Re: [ALJEFFER] List f letters - August 2, 1899, Pratt City Herald
    2. Barbara Tillery
    3. I have had several questions about the listing of letters. At that point in time,(or earlier) when people had letters or mail, particularly for general delivery, the post office would put a list of letters in the newspaper so that people would know to come and pick up their mail. When people lived in rural farming areas the post office did not deliver to the outlying areas. The farmers and coal miners would only know they had mail by reading their name in the paper. This can be used as a way of locating people at times other than census records. It can also be very helpful in the long time span between the 1880 census and the 1900 census. It is also helpful in times before 1880 to learn family member names and locations. It might help you realize how other people spelled a person's name at that time. Remember there were a lot of illiterate people or those who could not read or write in English. If your ancestor received mail, it would also indicate that there was someone else out there that was able to send them a letter. There is only a list of letters from old newspapers, there is no actual letter in the present time. I hope this helps to explain this more thoroughly. jabtillery@home.com -----Original Message----- From: ARTNFRAMES@aol.com <ARTNFRAMES@aol.com> To: jabtillery@home.com <jabtillery@home.com>; ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com <ALJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, August 15, 2000 10:15 PM Subject: Re: [ALJEFFER] List f letters - August 2, 1899, Pratt City Herald >In a message dated 8/15/00 11:08:21 PM Eastern Daylight Time, >jabtillery@home.com writes: > ><< EDWARDS, Nathan >> >What was the letter for this person? > > >Betty Rackley Taylor >Researching: Rackley, Taylor, Dudley, Edwards, Broughten, Moon, >Holladay, Adams, Williams, Bunyan, Kelly, Groce, Faulkner, Pugh, etc >

    3. I thought that some people might be interested in knowing that a book was put together about the families that have lived in Pleasant Grove, beginning from the 1850's or so. The Pleasant Grove Library has these books for sale. If you are interested, you may want to contact them about the book. Some of the family names in book are: ANTHONY BECK VANCE GOOLSBY CRUMLEY The phone number for the Pleasant Grove Library is 205-744-7221 I am not involved with the selling of the book, but thought some folks might be interested. This book was originally printed about a year ago and sold out and now the library has apparently reordered some extra books. jabtillery@home.com BUSBY SHOEMAKER WOMBLE MILLER

    1. [ALJEFFER] Why Did They Leave - Migration
    2. Cassandra Davis
    3. I am finding that there was a migration from Clarke/Wilcon/Marengo, Alabama to Mississippi during the early part of the 20th century. In some cases the located to Greenwood/Sidon, MS, in what is now LeFlore County.\ Some of told me it could have a flood (now know there was no flood in Clarke), boll weavel, drought, disease, following evangelism ministers, work on the delta/river/turpintine/no-weavel cotton, lumber, ... What have other experienced? Looking at a map, it seems like a big move from a place with varied resources to a far away place that was very different. Travel from 1900-1920 was not easy. Why leave? Thanks. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Try it today - there's no risk!
