Individuals can be looked up by name without your having to know whose lot he/she maybe buried on. Also for older burials, at least through the 1930's, there are books that give wonderful info including cause of death. Contact Don Evans in Family Service there and tell him Carol suggested it. I used to work in Family Service there and often did records checks and made photos of markers for folks all over the country who were researching their families. The cemetery is located on MLK Blvd. in Birmingham. I don't remember the exact address but you can get it in the white pages online. Good luck. Carol Stewart --part1_fb.a9857af.26df2e37_boundary--
I guess I am on the list a bit vicariously. My Hudspeth origins are actually from Henry County, AL but I have not been able to go further than Mary J. Hudspeth 1825-1891. The reason I am on the Jefferson County list too is that I have an obit for Mary (paper unknown), that states: "Mrs Mary Hudspath was killed near Birmingham by a train on the Huntsville Branch of the Mineral railroad. She was 64 and leaves 3 sons and 4 daughters." Family lore has it that she died while visiting relatives in the area, but I have no idea if they were Hudspeth kin. I neither know her maiden name or her Husband's first name, although she is listed as widow in the 1880 census. She had sons as well as daughters married into the other names listed above, any of which could have also been who she was visiting. Ron Hudspeth

General Marion Harris (given name) was born ca 1838 in Jefferson County, AL. Parents are officially unknown but were probably Sarah Swinney and Joel Harris. Siblings also unknown but may have been William M., John P. & James M. Harris. General married Susan Goodwin in 1859; they had 1 son, Secretary T. L. Harris from whom I descend. General enlisted in the 9th Alabama Infantry which later became the 58th AL Infantry but disappeared during the battle of Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, TN. (Nov. 1863) His wife, Susan, obtained a pension for his service, stating in her application that he disappeared and was never heard from again. Practically nothing is known about the family except that his mother, "Sarah Harris" owned property in Pinson AL. Her oldest son, William, married Mary Cooper and they raised their family in Trussville. Sarah's other son, James Harris married Susan Ritch, and they had 2 daughters before he was apparently killed during the Civil War. John Harris married Elizabeth Shedd and they migrated into Texas about 1850. Joel Harris is a complete unknown and I have almost no information as to where the family may have originated. Would like to find descendents of William M. Harris whose family was still in Jefferson County as of 1920. Kristina Harris kharris@televar.com

MONTGOMERY, William (1807-1891) SC AL MS also KEEN / KEENE, LEVER, WEEMS I am trying to find information on the ancestry of my great-great grandfather William MONTGOMERY (1807-1891) b. 22 FEB 1807, d. 13 MAY 1891. Conflicting census records indicate that he may have been born in SC, TN, or AL. SC is most likely. He settled permanently in Choctaw Co., MS in 1838 or 1839. On 7 Aug. 1838, he leased 240 acres in Section 16 of Township 17 for 99 years. Section 16 of each township was leased to provide support for the schools. There is a Masonic emblem on his tombstone in South Union Cemetery, Choctaw Co., MS. I have unverified information that Williams father was Andrew MONTGOMERY b. Mecklenburg County NC ca. 1785. Andrews father was James MONTGOMERY b. Lancaster County PA ca. 1735/45. James parents were John MONTGOMERY Sr. and Martha ? both born in Ireland and immigrated ca. 1735. My great-great grandmother MONTGOMERY was Martha Ann ? (1816-1888) b. ca. 1816, d. 10 SEP 1888. Conflicting census records indicate that she may have born in SC, GA, or AL. SC is most likely. According to the 1880 Census, her parents were born in SC. Her maiden name was possibly WEEMS. There was a marriage bond for a William MONTGOMERY and Martha WEEMS dated 29 DEC 1833 in Jefferson County AL, but I have no proof that this is my William and Martha. Another clue is the death certificate of the youngest daughter of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY. Her name was Sarah (Sallie) MONTGOMERY MOSS. The death certificate in 1928 lists her mother as Mary W??????. The rest of the maiden name is illegible - maybe Wiemmes. Also there is an Anderson S. Weems buried in South Union Cemetery, Choctaw County MS, 4 graves away from William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY. The grave stone information is "died 12 APR 1865 aged 25 years, 5 mos 24 days Pvt Co. I. 16 Miss. Vol CSA". I have found 3 deeds in Jefferson County AL showing the purchase and subsequent sale of land by a William MONTGOMERY and spouse Martha Ann (possibly WEEMS) MONTGOMERY dated between 1833 & 1835. William, Martha and their children were members of New Zion Baptist Church, Choctaw County MS. The children of William and Martha Ann MONTGOMERY were: Jonathan - b. AL ca. 1834 d. Susan, Where are your WOODSON connections? I have one way back up in VA. Elizabeth Woodson b abt 1699 in Henrico Co., VA. married first Thomas Morton abt 1720. Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard Woodson and Ann Smith Woodson. Richard was the son of Robert Woodson and Elizabeth Ferris Woodson. Robert was the son of Dr. John Woodson and Sarah Winston Woodson. John was born abt 1585 in Devonshire, England. He and Sarah, daughter of Issac Winston, married there before 1619. They migrated to Virginia. John was killed by Indians near his home. Sarah saved their sons by hiding them, one in the root cellar and the other one under a wash tub. She and a neighbor fought off the attack. The daughter of Thomas Morton and Elizabeth Woodson Morton, Judith married Edward Goode. Two of Edward and Judith's sons, Thomas and Robert Goode, were two of my gggg-grandfathers. They migrated with their families, via Christian Co., KY, to Jefferson Co., AL about 1818/19, . So I am a "double" cousin of varing degrees to any of the descendants of the immigrant, Dr. John Woodson and Sarah Winston Woodson. Do yours connect with any of these? If so, maybe we could exchange some information.
