Durden This name goes back to pre-Norman time, old Anglo-Saxon. The first Durden to America was Stephen who settled in Nanosecond County, Va. in 1640. His son, Jacob Durden, b. 1681, inherited his land, as well as lands in Isle of Wight County, Va. Jacob Durden, Jr. was born Isle of Wight Co. in 1798, Capt. in Rev. War. His son, john Durden, Jr. b. Isle of Wight Co., Va., d. Wilkes Co., Ga. 1800. He was married to Sarah Coleman (1736-1786), and after their marriage moved to Wilkes Co., Ga. to be near their daughter, Elizabeth, who had married Stephen Heard, who was much older then she. John Durden, Jr. and his wife, Sarah Coleman, had seven children, as follows: William Durden, b. 1775 N. C. m. Mary Dekle of Hanover, Germany b. 1784, d. 1855. They first settled in Montgomery Co.
