Peggy, How did you first learn of the cemetery moving?
My question: has someone documented the cemetery before it is moved? I'm relatively certain the Hueytown.org site would put it online if someone has a listing.
Is there someone out there who can do a city directory look up for me? We're looking for the Baptist church my husband attended when he was about 10 - that would have been about 1955. I was walking distance from his house which was I think in Pratt city though he was born in Republic - all Birmingham by that time I think. His mother was Ellie Vera Doubleman, widowed, with 4 children at home. Sandi in NM
I don't know anything about this particular family, but thought they had put a stop to covering up and moving cemeteries. It's a shame. Oh awell, whatever for the greater good, huh? I'm surprised it not a Wal-Mart coming in. Laura in Pleasant Grove
Did I miss something? What Cemetery at Irondale is being moved? There is a Family of Phillip's, that is having to be moved in Irondale Cemetery, because of a new Middle School being build, Some of the dates are in the 1800's, I do not know for sure but , I have heard that no one has come forward who knows this Family. Any one might know of this Family, you should call the Irondale City Hall. If any one does need any phone numbers or names who to contact I can get this for you. Or does any one have an update on this moving of the Cemetery. Peggy

The new Rootsweb mailing list system (Mailman) has gone into effect and will continue for the next couple of weeks. Most of you will notice few if any changes, however, following is a list of things to watch out for. The dates for the lists change over will be staggered alphabetically according to the following schedule: Thursday, August 17 - Lists A-C Monday, August 21 - Lists D-F Tuesday, August 22 - Lists G-I Wednesday, August 23 - Lists J-L Thursday, August 24 - Lists M-O Monday, August 28 - Lists P-R Tuesday, August 29 - Lists S-U Wednesday, August 30 - Lists V-Z You may check this link for any changes to the timetable: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/migrate_sched.html While the "migration" of the lists to a new server should process uneventfully for listmembers, there are a few points that need to be covered: 1. AOL users (and possibly some other ISPs), please check your spam folders, and, if you find list mail held as spam, you will need to be sure to click the *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send the list mail to your current mailbox. This will "train" the system to understand that mail from this new server is not spam. 2. If you are subscribed to both L & D mail modes of this list, the new system is not set up to send both to the same email address. If you want to be subscribed in both modes (many subscribe to both -- regular mail mode to read and delete and digest to file and save), it will be necessary to use another email address for your digest mail. It is my understanding that if you are subscribed to the list in both mail modes with the same address, you will be dropped from the digest list roster, so if this happens to you, please resubscribe with another address (Yahoo might be a good choice for an alternate email address). This will not effect those who subscribe in either of the mail modes exclusively. 3. If you want to post from more then one account, just send me the addresses of the extra accounts and I will add them to the Accept List. This means you can *post* from any of those accounts, while *receiving* the listmail from the one you originally used to subscribe. This feature is handy if you want to post from work but would prefer not to receive Rootsweb mail at your place of business. 4. The list's email address will change from [email protected] to [email protected] However, both addresses SHOULD continue to work. SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE messages *must* contain the word "subscribe" or "unsubcribe" in the SUBJECT of the message (versus message body, as in the past). 5. In the event you receive an unsubscribe notice and believe it to be in error, please contact me privately at [email protected] and I'll correct the problem. 6. Digest subscribers may notice some changes to the list digests. New instructions will be added to the digests -- please read them. In addition, the digest volume and issue number may be different (out of sequence) from what you had been receiving. If your digests arrive in a different format than you are used to and you would like it changed, contact me privately at the list admin address: [email protected] I will do all I can to help. 7. If you use email headers to filter list mail to special folders (as I do), you will probably need to tweak your filters once the new system begins. 8. If you run into any unusual or confusing occurrences with mail from this list that could possibly be related to the changeover, let me know. If you would rather contact me at my personal address just reply to me through this email. [email protected] Thanks, and please keep posting. That's the only way we'll know if it's working or not. :?) Happy hunting Nancy

Is anyone aware of a history of Powderly in Jefferson County? I know that Powderly was formed about 1887 as a cooperative community. The town contained 175 lots each measuring 50 by 120 feet. Corner lots were reserved for businesses and interior lots were sold as home sites for members of the Knights of Labor (a union organization). The brainchild of this village was Emil Lesser, a native of Germany and local restaurateur. Powderly, once a separate community, is now a neighborhood in Birmingham. I am interested in Powderly as well as the Knights of Labor. The Knights of Labor had their own newspaper entitled the Alabama Sentinel which was published in the mid 1880's to the mid 1890's. The state secretary-treasurer (in 1888), for the Knights of Labor, was Charles H. Bowling (1854-1928). He lived in Powderly and was a carpenter for a business called Crockett & Moore. Among his children were Charles Stanley Bowling (born 1891) and James J. Bowling (born 1896). I am trying to track down descendants of this family to get more information on Charles H. Bowling and his association with the Knights of Labor. Thanks in advance for any assistance offered. Doug Purcell Eufaula, AL
The "rest of the story" . . . The site below will give the history of the Alabama medical schools I mentioned previously as well as all in the US as of 1912. I learned that my gt. uncle, Thomas O. Smith of Bibb and later Shelby Counties, graduated in 1907 from the Univ. of Nashville Medical Dept which later had union with Vanderbilt. The school was extinct in 1911. Much thanks to Nick. The code is state abbreviation and a sequential number eg AL-02 would be Alabama's second listed school. Alot of these are no longer in existence. Nick Cirillo http://www.anes.uab.edu/AMAMedColls.pdf
Hi Melissa, thanks for listing the web address for everyone (see below). This is the web site I was referring to when looking for info about my uncle. I looked again at all the years (i.e., 1912 - 1931, about 7 in all) and found 1 year where it states that he attended medical college in Tenn, grad in 1907. It doesn't tell which school in Tenn. but some of my curiosity is satisfied. When looking at other physicians it shows that many went to school at Tenn. There is a lot of interesting info on this site other than physician info: *population of each town (determined by the previous census is an explanation in the 1923 directory key); *towns with hospitals *towns with doctors and their names, specialty, year born, year grad from med school In Alabama in 1923 the medical schools listed were: Graffenburg Institute, Dadeville Univ. of Ala. School of Medicine, Tuscaloosa Southern Univ. Med. Dept., Green[sboro] Birmingham Medical College Med. Coll. Dr. Henry Graham Sellers is said to have delivered my mother and all her siblings who were born in Jefferson County between 1901 and 1917. I can only find a Henry G. Sellers in the 1900 census, age 25, and he is listed as being in school at that time. He is the son of John W. Sellers who was born c 1850. Sometimes the "Sellers" surname is spelled "Sillers" in census records. Is there any record of a Dr. Henry Graham Sellers who lived in or near Birmingham between 1900 and 1920 or beyond? Thanks.
