    1. [ALJEFFER] The Lake by Lakeshore Drive
    2. Alice Campbell
    3. I may be older than dirt too, but my mother told many tales about the lake that was beside Lakeshore Drive in what is now Homewood. I don't remember the actual name of it, but I do know that all that area across from Samford formed a lake. The streetcar went out there from town and it was sort of a resort. I think the library has some pictures of it online. She talked about going out there to swim on the streetcar as a young person. Later she and my father moved to Homewood rather near the lake. I'd like to know when it was drained. Interestingly my mother's sister recently lived in a townhouse which is on what was the bed of the lake (as I understand it's position). Alice Campbell

She or he has to delete the ones that are on the digest. This started on Polk Co Ga as well and they were sending thirty or more a day. Sorry, I am for the reserch and Al Hunt had a chat room . The chat room also was for research. If you had no resaech to add on a certain night You had no reason to come into the room, .as it only held about 15 members at a time. Sorry, I press the delete button many times and it gets boring when this begans to happen on a lot of sites. Blessings for the day..

    3. As I recall, the Tyler family lived in Dora or Bessemer and Queenie actually worked at the hotel where the incident occurred; her occupation was "housekeeper" so that could mean housekeeper at the hotel or housekeeping which often meant on the census for a wife at home. My father, Fred Tyler, and his brothers used to sell fruit and vegetables at a stand near the hotel; this was in the 40's. Also, Oather was employed by the railroad after the WPA; prior to that he was a coal miner. Would love to find out which railroad he worked for. My dad remembers the train coming by their house and throwing ice off for the families in the area. The boys enlisted in the army to not become miners for life. Again, I appreciate all the input. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Delilah" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 19, 2006 2:40 PM Subject: Re: [ALJEFFER] Birmingham circa 1945 looking for news reports > yes or they were called trolleys - Carl, you the expert on this. 3. I can picture that block in my mind, but I don't remember a hotel of any size there. That would have been about 5 blocks east of the main downtown area. It would have been a small hotel. There was some discussion recently about City Directories. I don't remember whether it was stated that the BPL staff would do look-ups. 3. Does anyone remember Chris's Greek restaurant in B'ham? During the late 20s and early 30s. He was in my family and I have been trying to solve a brick wall about his line. I love to read these stories. This is a part of out heritage which is what genealogy is about. Ann

    3. Folks, I am subscribed to dozens of these Rootsweb email lists. Ostensibly they are all devoted to genealogy. However, the surname lists are always the most productive when trying to locate data about individuals. >From what I've seen, these "location" lists (e.g. county, state) are more about places and happenings/events. It is inevitable that a portion of the discussions will be about these topics. I almost always find those discussions interesting and contribute if I can. However, if it happens to be about "XYZ Cemetery" and I have no interest in or knowledge about the topic, I just click "delete." It takes less than a second to delete an unwanted message. Having the ability to communicate with all of you on the various subjects that we discuss makes it more than worth my time to delete those emails that I'm not interested in. So, unless the listmaster says "No," then keep 'em coming. Jim Nix (A Jefferson County resident for 55 of my 59 years)

    1. [ALJEFFER] old B'ham
    2. JC
    3. O.K. , I love it too. I found my GGrandmother's marriage where they had run away and disguised their names. I would gladly indulge anyone when that kind of thing shows up. Old B'ham has been a real shot in the arm for this old "toot." J.C. Harris

    3. I need to correct my previous message - Queenie Morris was her maiden name; she was married to Oather Baxter Tyler, so I assume she would have been known as Queenie Tyler. Would a person be able to find a city map from that time and look up that address? I'll also check out the Freeman Hotel. Thank you!!!

    3. you know what, go ahead, most of us live too far away from where we talk about and most of us are older than dirt and like to hear the stories of and about when the 'good times and places" since the world now seems to be in a mess - if we can't have our memories and what our fore families went or did, then we got nothing - if you don't know where you been, you will never know where you going!
