If a Methodist Church is involved then you might contact the library at Birmingham Southern. They are the repository for Methodist records. Birmingham Southern is located at 900 Arkadelphia Road, Telephone # 205-226-4740. Also someone at the Birmingham Library may be able to help. I just looked in the Jefferson County Cemetery Book and this is their entry about that cemetery EAST LAKE CEMETERY. Located in East Lake section of Birmingham on 78th Street between lst Avenue North and lst Avenue South. Formerly called Ruhama Baptist Church Cemetery. Was established by 1830. There is an East Lake United Methodist Church located at 7753 1st Avenue South, Birmingham 35206. Don't know if they have anything to do with the cemetery but their telephone # is 205-836-3201. Hope this helps, Irma J. Roy That puts a different spin on things. Baptist records are archived at Samford University and their address is: 800 Lakeshore Drive, Birmingham. Telephone # - 205-726-2749. This is Special Collections which I believe houses their Baptist collection. The Alabama Department of Transportation sells maps of each county. These maps are inexpensive [$.30, and 2.80]. They come in three sizes - one inch = one mile, half inch = one mile and quarter inch = one mile. The larger ones are great for plotting where one's ancestors had land. They all have township, range and section numbers. The site to purchase the maps is at http://www.dot.state.al.us/Bureau/Equipment/maps.HTM The link for the available maps is not the standard link It is the sentence [beside the bouncing blue ball] "This way to list of available county maps" with no underline, etc. A printable order blank also has a link on the page. I have several for different counties and use them quite regularly. Hope this helps, Melba Clark
Does anyone know who is in charge of the East Lake cemetery? Someone told me a Methodist church was in charge of it but I have no idea or which one. I would like to contact someone to find out who is legal owner of my GGG-Grandparents plots, Mahala Ellard Balker and William R Baker. My sister and I would like to replace the broken and missing headstones on thier graves. Any ideas who we would contact for information, or how to go about locating the correct people about this? We do not live in alabama, but plan to visit next spring. Thank you for your help, Kyanne
There is no room for name calling, obsencities, slander or any other personal negatives on this list. This list is for supporting genealogy in Jefferson county Alabama and that is all that is going to be done here. From here on out, anyone saying anything mean or blasphemous to someone else will be, without explanation, bounced from the list. I have requested a new list called ALJEFFER-chat. As soon as I receive notification that it has been set up I will let you know. Meanwhile, this list will only be used for posting genealogical postings or queries, or items that are specfically of geneaological interest. If you want to have a personal conversation then please carry it off list. PLEASE no more emails that consist entirely of "Thank you", "Yes". This list is too large to be able to support that casual type of conversation. I hate this heavy handedness far more than any of the rest of you can even imagine, but there is just no other way to get us back on track. We are all adults here and until the last few weeks we all acted like it. We have always showed consideration in the content of our postings and repect for one another, and we will again. To the vast majority of you who have waited patiently for things to return to normal, I apologize that it is taking so long. Please, help me out and post a real genealogical query and help get us back on track. Thanks Nancy

you got anything to say to me, I will give you my telephone number and you can say it to my face and not hide behind a computer and calling me an idiot is slander so you best shut up, you don't want to read, then get the hell off the list, if the list admin is overwhelmed, then she can go, no hard feelings, I certainly couldn't do it, but I be damned if you are going to call me an idiot along with a lot of others, when all you had to do was just turn off your computer and get the hell off the list! Hello Nancy, I joined this list for the reasons I have identified in a personal e-mail to you, First time I received several responses, but I have nothing definite yet, and this time I received a response; but I just want to prayfully, thank you for being here(the list). It gives me hope that one day, I will make a connection, due to caring people like you, and those that responded to me. Good luck in whatever you do, And may God bless you for your sweet spirit. I respect your decision, however. Sorry, I can't handle the list...I started one awhile back and never have a clue what I'm supposed to do when I get various notifications about "bounces", etc. My list is very, very tiny so it's at least fairly problem free. OH, GOOD GRIEF! I really don't think that any of these people who have been chatting about Birmingham have caused our list administrator to quit. That's not what I got from reading her e-mail at all. Did you not read her first paragraph? Rather, people who have been unsubscribing are probably the reason, and why are they unsubscribing? Who knows?! Who cares?! I, myself, do not find these conversations at all offensive and I only had ancestors there from about 1823 until 1844, and I have never lived there. As a matter of fact, because of the flurry of activity, which was not THAT great before these conversations started, I have actually gotten a couple of replies to my query regarding my Johnson's and Ashby's. But there are complainers on every list, that's one thing for sure, an abundance of them, too! I wish Nancy well and thank her very much for all her hard work.
