    3. The following is copied from the Autauga list. I don't think a discussion on the list would be helpful or even appropriate but letters to the noted entities at the bottom of Mr. Davis' information would certainly be beneficial. Caroline, Prattville The below is from Robert Davis, director of the Wallace State University library at Hanceville, so he should know what he is talking about. If the Birmingham library is really phasing out the Southern History Collection this would be a major blow to genealogists. They have one of the best genealogy collections in the state along with ADAH and Wallace State.-- John -------- Original Message -------- Subject: News from WSSC List 5 Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 13:09:35 -0500 From: Robert Davis <[email protected]> To: Bob Davis at work <[email protected]> I have been asked to qualify the previous posting about the situation with regards to the Southern History Collection of the Birmingham Public Library, the greatest collection for southern historical and genealogical research. Civil War books are now a low priority and books on states other than Alabama will also no longer be purchased or accepted as gifts. Books on Alabama and Jefferson County will supposedly still be accepted but limits have apparently been imposed even on that. We must protest these policies to the mayor of Birmingham and to the library board. It is not just a resource of benefit to a few local genealogists. The Southern History Collection has brought millions of dollars into Birmingham's economy from visits by researchers outside of Jefferson County, Alabama, and the United States but that will not continue if the collection is not allowed to add books on the Civil War, other states, or even other parts of Alabama. Please join me in writing to anyone we think might positively influence the situation: http://www.bplonline.org/admin/default.asp http://www.informationbirmingham.com/mayor/mayor.htm

    3. Rea, How horrible! I live in fear and trembling of that happening to me. I keep an online back up and another offline backup. I'm even considering getting even another offline backup and putting it in a safe deposit box! I'm using a Maxtor Basics 3200 for the offline backup. Do you know what's the difference between that and the One Touch? I suppose the One Touch comes with it's own backup software. My real horror is what would happen to all the hard copy things I have collected over the years in case of a fire - the Family Bibles, the handwritten letters a hundred years or so old, things like that. Birth certificates and such can be re-gathered, but all that original stuff is priceless. Hmm... Maybe I need to get a fireproof file cabinet? Alice

    3. I don't mind any sorts of posts, whether local history or surname requests or even just idle chit-chat. What I do find irritating is getting a post which is a reply to something in a previous digest and it _quotes the entire previous digest!_ I do wish people wouldn't do that. That is just totally unnecessary. Alice

    3. Thanks for the effort. I don't believe Bullock AL would be my Chester Hall. Minnie/Araminta/Arminta was born ca 1845 in Georgia so Mandy at age 24 could not be the same one I am looking for. I have never been to the AlJeffer archives. How do I get there? It may have been a 1st marriage for Chester but Araminta was married to Archibald Moon first. Archie Moon, ca 1891, doesn't sound right to me for some reason. She would have been 46 years older than he was at that point. Yes, thank you all for the teamwork and I will keep trying. I have to hit the jackpot sometime. 3. I was one of the "idiots" that contributed to the history of Birmingham and looking back at places of interest. My elderly parents and even older aunt really had a good time remembering all the places that were talked about, and I learned where my great grand father (a policeman) worked his second job, at the Hillman Hotel. I would never had known that without the memory jog. I also enjoyed reading about the places that no longer exist. I apologize to those of you who were offended but remember you are only a few out of many. Knowing how people lived and played is an important part of geneology. 1. Cutting unwanted text / avoid reposting the original

    3. BThere are pros and cons to this reply. The way to eliminate the unwanted text/e-mail (after hitting REPLY) is to put your cursor at the beginning of the unwanted text, hold the left button down and DRAG, highlighting it. Then click on Backspace and it will disappear, never to be seen again, unless you go to EDIT and Undo. But............sometimes people will only see the reply and not WHAT was originally posted, as I am guilty of. Changing the SUBJECT title would help a LOT I think. If you need anymore help on how to cut, copy and/or paste e-mail me privately. 3. Here are Netscape instructions. You'll probably find the equivalent for Outlook under Tools. Am not that familiar with that program. Open Netscape Email Click on Edit Click on Preferences Click on + next to Mail & Newsgroups Click on Composition Look to the right and UNCLICK Automatically quote the original message when replying Click OK deb & jim wrote: >i think a lot of people just hit the "reply" button; it's the easy way! does >someone know how to avoid reposting the original message? > > > >

    3. Peggy, The 1900 census shows Florence (b. 1884) & Lizzie (b. 1886) were still at home but that Armenta had born 4 children and all were still alive. Do you know their names? We know the Halls were in GA in 1884 (Florence's birth) but that as of 1900 they had been married 23 yrs., making a wedding ca. 1877. Maybe if we have the other 2 children's names, we can find them in 1880.

    3. >From the book, "Cemeteries of Jefferson Co., AL, pg 298, "EAST LAKE. Located in East Lake section of Birmingham on 78th Street between 1st Avenue North and 1st Ave. South. Formerly called Ruhama Baptist Church Cemetery. Was established by 1830." In 1835, William Turner deeded about five acres to Ruhauma Baptist Church. According to the deed, the church and cemetery were already located there. [William, my 5G-Great-grandfather, is buried in the cemetery there.] The Ruhuma Church is now disbanded. [in 2000, I think] Witnesses to the deed were: Edmund Wood and Burrel Bass. 3. CORRECTION The cost of the maps are: One-dollar and 30 cents for the two smaller ones. Two-dollars and 80 cents for the larger one. The larger one is well-worth the extra if one is interested in plotting land owners. Sorry about the post missing the "1" in the cost of the smaller ones in my previous post. 3. Thank you, Nancy for helping us all to get back on track and have a better understanding of how to conduct ourselves on this list. You said it very well. I believe I have some Lanier or Powells in Jefferson Co. I am trying to locate which ones so I can give you more information.
