There have been several letters posted to the site, expressing concern about possible cuts in the historical archives and research programs at BPL. One such, from Jim, as below........ " I agree with Caroline that a discussion of this on the list would probably not be productive. But, does anyone have a personal contact at BPL who could verify this before we start bombarding the Library and the Mayor's office with emails and letters of protest?" Jim ===================================================================================== Contingent on whatever the realities may be, two possible sites to search for some help and/or advice are ........... for the American Library Association at http://www.ala.org/ and an internal link of that site to a portion which deals with issues and advocacy. http://www.ala.org/ala/issues/issuesadvocacy.htm Carl, in Knoxville, Tennessee

Samford has a very good genealogy library. It's main problem is lack of parking. I circled the campus a dozen times and finally gave up. I had to get my daughter-in-law to drive me over, let me out, and come back and pick me up. Also they don't appear to have enough room to house everything that's in the Southern History Collection. Wallace State, on the other hand, is not centrally located. There aren't many motels, eating places for out of towners to use while researching. Birmingham Southern would be more centrally located, but I've never thought of them as having an interest in genealogy or local history. I certainly hope this isn't really happening, or if there is talk it will go away like many of the awful ideas people come up with. Alice
Sorry I forgot to change the header and add [ALJEFFER-L] to it the first time. There was a Moon family in Marshall County, Alabama who had connections in Jefferson County, Alabama. Are these related to your Moon family? General History of Marshall County, Alabama has articles which mention the Moon family of that county. My grandfather Frankie Jernigan had an Uncle and Aunt Moon. I don't have the info in front of me. I'll have to check my notes, if you think there might be a connection. I don't know how common a name it is in Jefferson County. Barry Jernigan

I was told a year ago about this by a library employee who worked in the Linn-Henley Resarch Library. They were very sad and also very upset when it was relayed to me, I just could not believe it, but it appears to be true. According to this employee, if it could be accomplished, the whole research library would be done away with, and I am not surprised to hear that either. The research library has undergone some changes in the last few years, and not for the better.......not for the patrons and certainly not for a number of the employees. From what I understand they work under quite a strain and are not allowed to do a lot of the things they used to do for patrons, both call in's, e-mail folks, and those who go there personally. I have to add that over the years the staff there have been some of the best and most knowledgeable I have ever met, and also the kindest. They are truly sad about the way things are going there, but dare not say so. J Parker, Pinson, AL

The only place I could find anything on Dudley A. Devore and family was on the 1930 census of District 16, Birmingham, Alabama. Dudley listed as age 35 married at age 27 and was a mechanic at a dry cleaning plant. Born in Alabama as was mother and father. Mattie was age 40, married at age 32 born in Alabama as were her parents. Elizabeth B. was age 7-10/12. Mavis E was age 6-8/12. This was all I could find nothing else on Ancestry.com, Rootsweb.com or familysearch.org. Sorry Joe

there has never been a Mulga County, Mulga is a community in Jefferson County. And back when the mining communities existed, the mining communities took names like they were cities, i.e. Blossburg Mines was know as Blossburg, Al. --- "[email protected]" <[email protected]> wrote: Capitol > Lettes now that you > have brought it ot my attention. Blesings You are SO sweet to always give your blessings. I noticed I had two addresses for Jefferson county. One was the older one which had the L included in it & in capitals too I think. In the newer one rootsweb had dropped the l. So my LAST email (to Nancy) I sent to the newer of the two, to see if that made a difference or not. I notice you sent using the older one, but it did NOT show up as coming from ALJEFF, or aljeff. I LIKE knowing where my e-mails are coming from. Let's all just sit back & watch for Nancy's reply. She'll be able to tell us what is going on. I'm seeking information about .... Matt/Mattie [Stark] DeVore ... m. Dudley DeVore & two daughters ....... Mavis and LIzzie Bruce .......... relevant dates, where buried, any other genealogy kinds of info. Mavis married and I think had children, but Lizzie Bruce never married. So ........ any info about Mavis' marriage, children and grand children also would be helpful. Mavis was my cousin, i.e. her mother Mattie [Stark] DeVore was a younger sister to my grandmother Nancy Ann [Stark, Wells] Pruett. Thanks in advance to anyone who may have any information or suggestions. Carl Thomas {Knoxville, Tennessee}
I have emailed someone who works in Southern History for clarification.
