    3. Hello, List! My mother's family comes from Jackson County--Sand Mountain, originally known as Racoon Mountain. It includes a lot of the Cherokee families who managed to avoid removal westward in the 1830s. For instance, there was a James COOPER living in one of the first cabins in Jackson County in 1820 who deposed his nephew Isaac Cooper from Wayne Co., Kentucky in a famous law case. Another mixed blood relative was Dr. William Alexander DAVIS who succeeded Chief Arthur BURNS as the last chief of the Jackson County Cherokees. Some went west, some disappeared, some blended. Surnames I am interested in are COOPER, ADAIR, TROXELL, BLEVINS, BURKE, WILLIAMS, SMITH, SHANKLE, FOSSETT, GOFF, PROCTOR, BLACK, SIZEMORE, LACKEY, KIEFF, REDWINE, GOBLE and BUNDREN/BONDURANT. Would be interested in corresponding with others and sharing information. Donald Panther-Yates
