I am researching from Australia, so please pardon my ignorance regarding all things US. I am researching a woman who was born around 1819 in (she stated) "Long Island, America". I have since found that there are 10 Long Islands in the US, one being in Jackson County, AL. Her name was Eliza Deans and she was (reputedly) a "woman of colour". Can anyone give me some direction as to how I might find her birth, etc? Thanks Sam (in Melbourne)
