Surnames: CUNNINGHAM, ALEXANDER, DAVIDSON, PATTERSON, HOLMES, CRAIG, MONTGOMERY, HENDERSON Am looking for any possible assistance in finding the ancestry and origin of a John CUNNINGHAM that arrived in Marion Co., TN in ca. 1822 from points unknown. There is excellent circumstantial evidence, but no known documentation, that this John CUNNINGHAM might be the same individual as another John CUNNINGHAM found in NC, SC, and even TN prior to the arrival in Marion Co., TN. My objective is to confirm or deny that these individuals might be one in the same. The earlier John CUNNINGHAM had direct connections to families named ALEXANDER and DAVIDSON. His father died prior to his birth on 8 July 1783. She later married into the PATTERSON family, then an individual named HOLMES, and finally a gentleman named CRAIG. She out lived each of her four husbands. During these marriages, she lived first lived in SC, then various places in NC, moved to middle TN, northern AL, and finally western TN. Besides her son named John CUNNINGHAM, she had several children by her second husband, and one by her third husband. The John CUNNINGHAM of known interest and his family arrived in Marion Co., TN in ca. 1822. Based on census information, he and his family have almost identical demographics to the family of the earlier John Cunningham. The John CUNNINGHAM, of Marion Co., TN, was born 8 July 1783 or 1784. He gave five of his children obvious surnames as their middle names: Alexander, Davidson, Henderson, Montgomery, and Holmes (or Homes). HENDERSON is believed to be the maiden name of his wife. One of his daughters was named Rachel Montgomery CUNNINGHAM and that matches the married name of what would have been a half sister of the other John CUNNINGHAM. If the two men were one in the same, the Alexander and Davidson names could be explained as they were the surnames of grandparents for the other John CUNNINGHAM being researched. John CUNNINGHAM, of Marion Co., TN, named one daughter Amy Homes (or Holmes) CUNNINGHAM, HOLMES is the surname for the third husband of the mother for the other John CUNNINGHAM. After the death of John CUNNINGHAM in 1842 in Marion Co., TN, son John D. CUNNINGHAM moved to adjacent Jackson Co., AL in ca. 1848. In 1853, John D. CUNNINGHAM purchased land on Sand Mountain, which is located on the eastern side of Jackson Co. and adjacent DeKalb Co., AL. He opened the Cunningham Mines (coal) in partnership with an individual named PATTERSON. PATTERSON was the surname for the second husband of the mother for the other John CUNNINGHAM of interest. John D. CUNNINGHAM also secured a loan to one James DAVIDSON in DeKalb Co., AL in 1853 and that, as previously noted, is the surname of a grandparent to the other John CUNNINGHAM. Would greatly appreciate the opportunity to exchange information with those that could contribute to the resolution of the mystery as to whether or not these two men are one in the same. Do you have any record of a Lucy CUNNINGHAM, born 3/25/1831, died 10/30/1901, probably on Sand Mountain? She married James Moore, born 8/17/1813, died 3/3/1877. Info is from family bible, so Lucy may be a nickname, or middle name.
