    3. Thanks for your response -- I didn't know about the 24 hour law. I had guessed that possibly Julia Ann or JC's siblings, if he had any, might have been some distance away; I'm pretty sure Mary Margaret was in western AL, around Red Bay. Again, I appreciate your input, Gay =========== RBSGEN@aol.com wrote: > Gay, this was a common practise due to distance of relatives and slow > transportation. 3. Go to any search engine and type in Free Mason Jackson County Alabama and it will bring up some sites where you can see all the Blue Lodges in Alabama. There is a place where you can e-mail them also. I doubt that you will get much genealogical information from them. My maternal ggrandfather, JC REDMAN, died Jan 27, 1888 in Paint Rock -- his funeral was preached in early Jul 1888 with two Masonic Lodges participating in the ceremonies (this info from The Scottsboro Citizen). My father was also a Mason; however, I know absolutely nothing about this organization. My question: how do I go about finding my ggrandfather information from the Masons? 2. Ask any Lodge secretary the name and address of the State Secretary and write him. If any records of that Lodge are available he will know or can tell you who to write to. How much value the records will be is highly questionable regarding genealogical value.

    2. Gay Parrish
    3. I am "stonewalled" in finding my ggrandfather's (James C) parents, birthplace, etc. In the 1880 AL census he is listed in Jackson County as a Mill Worker, bn 1846 SC, died 27 Jan 1888 in Paint Rock, married to "Caroline" with daughters Mary Margaret (my maternal grandmother) bn 1876 AL and Julia Ann bn 1875. J. C.'s obit was in The Scottsboro Citizen's 2 Feb 1888 publication -- death due to pneumonia -- and strangely (to me) the same paper's 12 Jul 1888 edition referenced his funeral which was preached the previous Sunday at Paint Rock. Any ideas as to why the funeral was some 5+ months later?? I would much appreciate any information on this family; if anyone is researching I have Mary Margaret's information forward. Gay Parrish

    2. Gay, this was a common practise due to distance of relatives and slow transportation. Few bodies were embalmed and the law required burial within 24 hours if not embalmed. Weather was also a factor, especially in Northern locations.

    1. [ALJACK] Jackson Co., AL Professional Genealogy Researcher
    2. Herb Cunningham
    3. Would greatly appreciate having the name and address of a qualified professional genealogy researcher to investigate a specific item related to Jackson Co., AL. Wish to determine their research rates, etc., before starting any investigation. William Cunningham married Nancy Hughes on 27 Jan 1861 in Jackson Co. They had three daughters before he was killed at the end of the Civil War. They were Mary L., Frances, and Elizabeth Cunningham. Nancy (Hughes) Cunningham then married Robert Gilliland on 30 July 1871 in Jackson Co. The Gilliland's were known to have had one daughter, Susan Gilliland. Nancy (Hughes/Cunningham) Gilliland was found to be living with only her daughter Susan as of the 1900 Jackson Co., AL census and is believed to have died in ca. 1905. I am most interested in knowing what happened to the three daughters of William and Nancy (Hughes) Cunningham. Toward that end, would like to have thorough research of Jackson Co. marriage, will, probate, land records, etc. Am not having any success in uncovering this story using the available remote research tools. Hope that a qualified professional genealogy researcher in Jackson Co., might be more successful. Herb Cunningham herbc@ionet.net
