    1. [ALJACKSO] LISTOWNER: Exchange time (please read this first)
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, Ok.....let the Surname Exchange begin! Between now and Sunday, June 11 everyone is invited to post their surname queries. Before you send your messages please read the following: 1) You must put your SURNAMES IN THE SUBJECT LINE. (Not the word "surnames" but the actual names) 2) No more than 3 surnames per message, however you can send as many messages as you like. 3) Remember this list is set to "reply to sender". This means that when you hit the reply button your message will be sent to the sender of message you are replying to and not to the list. So, you will have to put the list address in the "To" field. 4) You may use any query format you like, whether it be just a list of names, names with dates, outlines copied from your genealogy program, or a formal query. Also, keep in mind that this exchange period may drastically increase list activity. If you have limited e-mail space, your mailbox could fill up quickly, and that can cause messages to bounce. After 3 bounces the system will automatically unsub you, however you can always subscribe again. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions please contact me privately. Ok...enough of my chatter. Let's get busy and find our elusive ancestors! Have fun and happy hunting! Sincerely, Kim Ivey <kivey@companet.net> Listowner

    1. LISTOWNER: Subject lines
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, When you post messages to the list please put something meaningful such as names/dates/places or be specific in what you are asking. Examples of good subject lines are "JOHNSON, 1850-1900, Jackson Co., AL" or "Where is the Smith Cemetery located". So, please take the time to prepare a good subject line names/dates/places or specific question). After all, the subject line is the first thing people notice, and having a good concise one greatly increases the chances of your message being read and your chances of finding a connection. I don't mean to be picky, I just want this list to be productive for all listmembers. Sincerely, Kim Ivey <kivey@companet.net> Listowner

    1. LISTOWNER: Next Week is Surname Exchange
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Listmembers, I declare the week of June 4-11 as Surname Exchange Week. Everyone is invited to post their surnames and give a little info about them. Here are the rules: 1) You must put the surnames in the subject line. Then in the body tells us what you are searching for. 2) Don't post more than 3 surnames per message, but you can post as many messages as you like. Also, you will need to use the list address to send new messages to the list address. This list is now set to "reply to sender" so you can't use the reply button in order to get your message on the list. I have set it up where the list address will be displayed at the bottom of each message posted to the list. Please keep in mind that a Surname Exchange can drastically increase list activity and result in several messages per day. This can create a problem if you have limited e-mail space or don't have time to sort through the messages. So, please consider this an advanced notice. I will send another message on Sunday, June 4 to officially start the exchange. Good luck to everyone! Sincerely, Kim Ivey mailto:kivey@companet.net Listowner

    1. Daniel NORMAN
    2. Hi! Is anyone out there searching for Daniel Norman??? My line as follows: Daniel NORMAN, born 1803/1808, North Carolina, and died 1861-1863, place unknown. He married #Eleanor GRIGGS on 1 Jan 1824, Franklin County, Tennessee. He married #2 Polly HUTTON on 1 Jan 1928, Franklin County, Tennessee. (See note at bottom) #8-Daniel Webster Norman, born 5 Aug 1861, Franklin County, Alabama, died 22 Jan 1928, Williamson County, Tennessee. he married Catherine Priscilla CLARK on 5 Aug 1877, Williamson, Tennessee. In December 1863, five of Daniel's children were brought to Nashville, Tennessee, by their mother, Litta, to be close to her oldest son James, who was a Union soldier and in a hospital in Nashville. Litta died 2 days after arriving in Nashville on 4 Dec 1863, and the five children were placed in an orphanage. James took his brothers, David Crockett and Daniel Webster, back to Alabama. Mary Ann remained in the orphanage, George W. was sent to the County Asylum because of epilepsy. He was four years old at the time. Daniel Norman was reported to be a Federal soldier who had died prior to 1863. His children were supposed to have drawn a pension for his military service, although I have been unable to find any record of it. 1. LISTOWNER: Updated list List rules
    2. Kim Ivey
    3. Hello Listmembers, It's me, your crazy listowner. I have revised the list rules a little and am posting them here. In a few more days I will be adding this to the welcome message that everyone gets when they first subscribe. I will also post it here for everyone to read. NOTE: This message is not in response to anything anyone has posted. I just think it's important to post these updated rules. LIST RULES · Stay on topic. Inappropriate topics include (but not limited to) the following: virus warnings, chain letters, advertisements or websites not related to this list, political/religious/racial statements or slurs, general computer/software/internet questions, name meanings, old sayings, old medical terms, recipes, home remedies, poems or stories not related to this list. · No flaming (hate mail). If you simply must vent please take it off the list. Also don't reply to hate mail. To do so will only generate tons of messages that nobody cares to read. · No roll calls. You are more than welcome to post your surnames, but you must put at least put the surnames in the subject line. From time to time I will declare a "swapping" or "sharing" week, but the same rule applies here too. · Don't correct other listmember's spelling or grammar. · Don't police the list. Your listowner is capable of handling listmembers who get out of line. · No vulgar/obscene language (cussing). Remember, there could be children lurking around. It is not my intention to silence free speech. However, the mailing lists at RootsWeb were created for a purpose, to provide a forum where researches can discuss genealogical matters relating to the list in question. They were not designed to be a free-for-all. I am proud to say that since I've been the listowner, there have been no problems. I hope it stays that way. Also, I want to be as diplomatic as possible. If anyone has any suggestions, please e-mail me privately. Nobody will be removed from the list simply for having a different opinion, as long as you e-mail your opinions and concerns to me privately and not air them on the list. Sincerely, Kim Ivey <kivey@companet.net> Listowner
