I had the same experience with an ancestor; but, when I decided to do "circle" genealogy, and wrote and asked them to check for his death in a nearby county-- WAALAH!!! There it was!!! My grandfather, who died in 1948, in Geneva County is not dead either according to the Ala. Bureau of Vital Statistics. His death was never recorded for some odd reason.
