So if I have information about things concerning Fort Smith, Arkansas, I should be willing to share it with the Arkansas state coordinator who could either use it or send it to the proper county site for use. We should all be doing this. I just offered Rhonda Smith some information I had on Idaho and Montana. All we have to do is keep our eyes open for useable data then pass it on. The reason I don't participate as much as I used to is because of the Volunteer side of my Alachua County Ancient Records Coordinator position and our all Volunteer Alachua County Virtual Cemetery Project. With the first we have online forms that allow Volunteers to transcribe any of our 493,813 online page images. The images become every word searchable once they are transcribed. We have 17,570 pages transcribed. All of our existing County Commission Minutes from 1846 to 1992 are every word searchable. All of our existing marriages are online with images from 1837 through 1973. There is a period between 1973 and 1990 something where there is only an index, no images. We have deed images online from 1826 to about 1957... mostly indexed. There is an online way for Volunteers to index and add descriptions &c. We have mortgages online from 1847 to 1923... There will be more. All of our existing probate files and Books are all indexed. The Florida Supreme Court made us take down all Court files... I have a petition here to allow us to put the images and transcriptions back up... http://petitions.moveon.org/sign/allow-ancient-court-records There is more... Discover Alachua County History for yourself. Ties to Whoopi Goldberg (I had a few seconds in the original "African American Lives), Garth Wilkinson James of Boston, son of Henry James, Brother to Henry James, the author and Wilkie was an Officer of the 54th Mass of Glory fame. He was injured in the assault on Fort Wagner. The there is Andrew Carnegie and Joseph Valentine. Every knows Carnegie, but no one knows Valentine. Joseph was a member of the only free black family listed in the 1860 Alachua County Census. He went to court in 1862 and sold himself as a Slave. After the war for awhile he was on the wrong side of the law, then he became a constable and eventually was elected a County Commissioner...
