It is getting harder to find people who are willing to create websites and I feel that this is hurting our recruiting efforts. I already link to some blogs from my webpages, but blogs could serve as county sites too. Should we consider linking to blogs that are about the history of a particular are? Blogs are easier for people to create. I can think of several blogs that would be great additions to our sites. Cyndy
If you are going that way, why not Facebook pages too? Things on both are a little less formally laid out. I have Facebook pages for my Volunteers, but others use them all the time. They do lead to my websites in many ways... BTW... those that don't remember me. I was part of USGenWeb, way back. On the board and more... I set out to make Volunteering more creative, less rote and follow the rules type places. I was with both ALHN and AGHP for a long while. Now I mostly do my Ancient Records job and our Alachua County Virtual Cemetery Project. (And of course try to keep up with my 12 grandkids, 4 of which are big contributors to the Virtual Cemetery Project) I used to be the Florida Coordinator here, with Alachua and Gilchrist as my linchpins. I tried to give Florida to a Board member awhile back. I don't know if USGenNet helped out or not. There is so much here in Alachua County, so much to share, that to add other places wouldn't be fair. So I may not even belong here any longer. Cyndy, a very good idea. A blog platform such as WordPress is free but still needs a hosting service which can always be scrounged somewhere. If the volunteer would rather use a WYSIWYG editor, Weebly is an excellent choice. Dead easy and they host your site for free as well. Those who eventually take over some of the States or counties that need adopting where Nathan has already created a placeholder for them in his Content Management software would also be easy for people to use. We don't lack for options that can create W3C compliant websites but what we lack is how we deal with a new volunteer when they join our organization. I think there should be some sort of "welcome kit" if you will that outlines choices and options for creating websites and someone to walk the new person through those options. Perhaps some design and quality standards should be discussed as well. More information about the organization and how it is structured might also be included in this kit.
