Shared hosting is just that they host many domains on one box. No one else has access to the sites. Think "server farm." You just don't have your own server. Ok. This is something I need cleared because I have always been on one server but was not to sure what shared meant, I assumed something like a co-op. Also be it as it may, I always thought hosting companies all were one server. Some people like me just dont know it all and need a push lol;) Dan M ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kevin Subra" <kevin.subra@gmail.com> To: <alhn-general@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 03, 2013 10:34 AM Subject: Re: [ALHN-GENERAL] [ALHN-BOARD] archive > Shared hosting is just that they host many domains on one box. I've been on DreamHost for several years. I host our church site (with MP3 and PDF downloads) and 12 other sites, including my primary family genealogy site. I am using 9.3 GB of space (mostly the church because of the audio - usually 2 MP3s a week). Excellent company from my perspective (though I would not be considered a power user). the ALHN domain is currently on a dedicated server but it's not the only domain there. PA-Roots.com is the primary domain hosted there along with some small websites. A dedicated server is not needed for such a small website as ALHN and the relatively small amount of traffic it receives. A dedicated server would be needed down the road if the website were to have a large increase in traffic and the need for lots of storage and automated tools.
