This was posted to another list, I have sent the inquirer a message saying who I think it maybe. It cannot be Stephen Oates and Elizabeth Shipp's offspring because the document for the sale of the land in Sampson County listed in Sampson County North Carolina Special Proceedings Book 3 pp 43-46 list all of their children, as does Elizabeth's Estate Records and a Joseph is not listed among their offsprings. I found a Joseph on the tax lists for Bladen County North Carolina for 1768. None of the other descendants have an heir named Joseph. So is this actually a grandson or great-grandson does anyone know for certain.
