The family story has been that NW was left with the Loftis family..."orphaned" as some of the elders say. Here are the "facts": NW's parents were both born in GA (1880 census) NW was born in AL (1850 census & those following) NW was born on August 4, 1845 (inscription on headstone) NW was reared by George & Elleny Loftis in Alabama (1850 & 1860 census) NW used the name of Loftis until sometime in the 1870s (1865 marriage record; 1870 census) George Loftis was born c. 1813 in SC or GA (census records) Elleny Loftis was born c. 1811 in GA (census records) (various spellings of Loftis in records -- Loflis / Loftes / Loftus / Loftess) I've recently learned another bit of information that I hope will prove helpful in finding NW's birth parents. Sometime in the late 1870s or early 1880s, two men rode up to NW's house on horses, said they were from Georgia, and told one of NW's boys ("Doc") that they wanted to see his father. They talked and visited for several days and then left. Doc's father told him that the men said they were his brothers. Boyd (14 yrs) 1865 Marriage Spouse 1: N. W. Loftes / Spouse 2: Arry Ann Norton Marriage Date: 13 Oct 1865 Marriage Place: Barbour Surety/Bond Date: Performed By: Justice of the peace Surety/Perf. Name: E. S. Warr OSPage: 649 1870 Barbour County, AL Census Toney (24) & Arriann Loftis (24) and Wm (3), Geo (2), & Nancy (1 mo.) 1880 Barbour County, AL Census: N. W.
