    1. Re: [ALHENRY] Names of Slaves
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Oates Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.henry/3057.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Could you tell me more about these Mulattoes from Memphis. In 1879 a Mary Oates, who was of Mixed blood married James Wommack she was 18. Also a mulatto named Julia Oates was enumerated in the household of my thirdgreatgrandfather Ephraim Oates on the 1880 census. She was a servant. I would like to find the names of the slaves in my family, but if I will be openning a can of worms so to speak I will leave the matter alone. On the 1790 census of North Carolina James Oates my fifthgreatgrandfather owned 3. His daughter in law on the 1840 census of Henry County Alabama had 8 or 10. Ephraim's name on the roster of the Henry Mounted Rebels 1863, showed he had charge of 20 negroes. So this must have been those from his mother's plantation. I do not want to open a can of worms. Just curiouos what Longs and Wards are you descended from.
