Roberta, My friend, Laura C. Galloway, thought she subscribed to this group via email; but, she says that every time this group email comes in, it is completely blank. Could you try re-subscribing her in digest mode? Her email is: rdvalky@aol.com Thanks! Next... I am sooooooooo thrilled that Bobby Horton is coming to the annual dinner!!! He is absolutely my favorite for CW music. I have several friends who I would really love to bring with me; but, I did not know if we can bring extras as this is going to be a sellout soon. Please let me know. These people are not members of the Henry County Historical Group. Hope you are doing well. Still want to enlist you and your friend into UDC; but, it may have to be next fall as I have been so involved with my Mom and her problems lately. Just don't have time for anything else. Love, Ceya

Rex, Yes, I have personally been to many burials in the Williams Cemetery through the years as the older heads of the Elliott Clan crossed over. The tradition of attending funerals by "The Texas Folks" in Alabama and "The Alabama Crowd" in Texas still survives 115 years after "The Texas Folks" settled in Smtih County circa 1891. Rex, there were a good many families that moved from Henry County to East Texas around this same time. In the southeast Henry County area this included the families of Waller, Allen, Adams, Elliott, Brown, Hales, Buie, King and of course your McClenny family. Was there any event in East Texas that would have attracted these families at this particular time, say between 1880-1900? I would be most interested to find out. Steve Rex Kirby <rex@tyler.net> wrote: Thanks Steve. Until I find out otherwise I am going to assume that whoever wrote the obit erroneously referred to the Cemetery as Williams Chapel. I am fairly familiar with this area and have made inquiry of several other individuals who gave the same response as you did. But knowing that you have relatives from Alabama who are buried in Smith Co and indeed in this cemetery I knew from your research that you would know if there was ever a church there. I suspect that in addition to the Elliotts and Williams there are any number of other individuals there who came from Alabama. The oldest marked tomb in 1977 was J. W. Bostick who died 24 Jan 1891 but this marker could not be found in 1986. Also, there were several tombs with no dates and of course a number of unmarked graves some of which could very well be older than 1891. If you know of any such burials I would appreciate your letting me know. The "man" of the house where he was staying had been in the military. He is my husbands biological father and probably doesn't even know that my husband exists. He was a white man, (possibly of american indian, or greek decent some nationality with a tannish skin tone) stood about 5'8. "Fred" would be approx 70 years old today, and was quite a drinker back in the day from what I have been told. He was involved with my mother in law briefly and was either married or coming out of a marriage at the time and possibly had a child from that other marriage. My mother in law's name was Mary (either Garza, Alexander, or McKim) not sure what name she was using at the time, and she worked at the Monterey House Restaurant as a waitress. Recently I have been speaking with someone by the last name! Orr from Tyler, and he and my husband bear a STRONG resemblance so I am also trying to tie in the Orr and Williams family if at all possible. Please email me and I will try my best to answer any other questions. Thank you so much! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This road runs sort of parallel to the Henderson Highway some five miles apart in this region of Smith County. Both the Williams and Elliott families attended Sharon Missionary Baptist Church and attended the Murphree School there prior to the Great Depression. It sounds like your information may be limited, but if you can share ANY names from Smith County with me, I will run them passed a few of my Elliott cousins out there. Though that line has been gone from Camp Springs, Henry County for over 115 years, we are still as close as first cousins or siblings in matters of the heart. Or if you need names from the Williams family in Henry County the Elliott Clan married into, I can do that as well. Please feel free to contact me via my personal email: jselliott37@yahoo.com. Rex, There has never been a church there, just a community house where reunions were held and the lunch was served on "cemetery work day". The church of that area is Sharon Missionary Baptist Church just a few miles from north of Williams Cemetery. I have never, ever heard of Williams "CHAPEL" Cemetery. Regards, Steve Rex Kirby <rex@tyler.net> wrote: Steve, There was an obit in the Tyler paper recently that referred to the Williams Cemetery as Williams Chapel Cemetery. I called the funeral home to verify that we were talking about the same Cemetery but they could offer no explanation as to why it was referred to as Williams Chapel. I am not familiar with the history of this cemetery and thought maybe you might know if there was an old church there at one time. My files on the Williams family were gathered in pre-computer days and are in file cabinets in storage just now as I am in "mid-move". But I will share what little I know "by heart". The Williams family that my Elliotts married into lived east of Tyler on the Henderson Highway (Texas State Highway 64) not far past the large WILLIAMS CEMETERY. The Sharon Church Road dead ends into Highway 64 at the Williams Cemetery. Mary Williams married James Albert Elliott, both of them born prior to 1910 and never had children. Mary had siblings. James Albert, one of eight children, was nicknamed "Abb" and the Elliott Clan had several Marys in it so Mary Williams Elliott was nicknamed "Mary Abb". This became so engrained that she later signed checks with this moniker. The Elliotts settled circa 1891 on the Tyler-Overton Road (FMRD 850) in what was known as the BACON COMMUNITY dissected by Mud Creek. The adopted son's name was Elton Mathis. John Daniel Mathis had other children by his first wife, but you only seem interested in Margaret and the adopted son. I do not mind answering your questions, but I am curious as to your interest in them. James Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am sending this in case you did not receive a previous reply I tried to send. I think you are right in thinking that is the Margaret. John's first wife died a few days after the birth of one of her daughters and John took her body back to AL to bury it near his father's grave in AL. After he returned to MS, he married Margaret. They moved to LA when his brothers moved there. John and Margaret adopted a son. John eventually deserted Margaret and their adopted son. Margaret apparently became mentally unstable and died in Oak Grove, LA. When John deserted her, he returned to AL and that is where we have lost track of him. My family history books are now published and I am no longer actively pursuing John's tracks. Thanks for the contact.
