This line has been in Abbeville forever, but I'm running into trouble now that one of them is listed as being born in VA. I have John W. Adams m. Pearl Doswell(his first wife's name is Sarah), in the 1920 census; in 1900 census John is shown with his parents Henry T. Adams and wife Martha m. abt 1879, both born in AL and Henry's father is listed as being born in North Carolina. Henry was b. abt 1852. 1900 Abbeville,AL Precint 19 - Shorterville ADAMS, Henry head age 47 married 21 years AL NC Martha wife 49 AL John W. son 20 AL Thomas Harris son 17 AL Jess M. son 13 AL Robert L. son 11 AL Henry E. son 8 AL Does anyone know who Henry's father might be? I think Martha may be Martha Harris, but I'm not sure yet. Any info to help me move on is appreciated!

He was born between 1877 and 1878. His death certificate gives 21/mar/1878 as his year of birth, that is what his wife had placed on his tombstine, but the 1880 census looks like it has a three in the age place. It is rather hard to read. You might wanna try the Veterans Administration. They're the ones in charge of military markers and grave sites, whether Union or Confederate. Good Luck! With his Regt. info, you can send off for service records and possibly a pension applicaion, which would reveal his date of death. Good luck! Steph
If you haven't already, try getting copies of pension application. This usually will have birth date, or at least age so you can determine year of birth. I apologize if this site has been posted to the list before but thought it a very valuable tool. This is a site of people who volunteer to take pictures at cemeteries. The more people that know of it, the more locations will be available. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/2318/ What a great idea. Brenda

My Aunt Sara Bunting Oates, located documents in the Courhouse at Abbeville proving that Walter Bragg's Oates father was a Dr. Wyatt Stephen Oates, but his mother was a Mrs. Miller, now what type of documents would these be. Deeds or the Family Estate Records. If there is anyone doing research on this family please contact me I plan to contact Aunt Sara for the documents. My email address is LeBateman@NetZero.Net. Thank you
Have sent the 1850 Agriculture Census of Henry Co, Ala. I can't get into the Henry Co census today for some reason, but will try again tonight. Hope this Cockren is the one you are seeking. Patti
This came from another list and might interest those of you with ancestors in TX, VA, or the NE states: Melanie Atkins College Station, TX The LDS has made available on microfiche the holdings of the Library of Congress collection of pre-20th century land ownership maps. This set contains 1449 county maps relating to 1041 counties, concentrate mostly in the Northeast and North Central states, and VA, CA and TX. Approximately one-third of all US counties are represented in the collection. The great majority of the maps were prepared between 1840 and 1900. Many of the maps contain sketches of homesteads and family members around the margins, some have portions of wills and heir information (incl: the married names of daughters), and the progression of land ownership over the years. A few contain Indexes.. The fiche begin with number 6079238, and run through to 6081181. A listing can be found in the LDS catalogue under United States-Maps, and under United States-Land and Property. Previously, copies of these maps were available throught the Library of Congress for between $50 and $75 EACH. Now, you can xerox them from the 15 cent fiche.... > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > Carol P. you must be in Dothan.
Yes the street in Dothan and the Street in Headland were both name for my kinflok. The Street in Dothan was named for Governor William Calvin Oates and the street in Headland for my secondgreatgrandfather Dr.W.S. Oates. he had a hand in founding Headland in 1893. He and Governor Oates were distant cousins. Dr. Oates grandfather Stephen and Gov. Oates father William were second cousins.
