    1. MATHISONS in Henry Co.
    2. Steve Groh
    3. Greetings Everyone, I am descended from Malcolm Mathsion and Eliza Wright....early pioneers of Henry County. They lived near the small community of Edwin. Many of their children lived in and around Skipperville, Alabama. I am interested in contacting anyone who might have a connection to the MATHISON surname. MALCOLM MATHISON was born Abt. 1815 in South Carolina, and died June 24, 1897 in Alabama. He married ELIZA WRIGHT March 20, 1839 in Henry County, AL. She was born October 1823 in Georgia, and died September 17, 1905 in Henry County, Alabama. Children of MALCOLM MATHISON and ELIZA WRIGHT are: 1. TABITHA MATHISON, b. 1840; m. WILLIAM GILFORD, May 11, 1869, Henry County, AL. 2. JOHN WESLEY MATHISON, SR., b. December 31, 1841, Henry County, Alabama; d. March 28, 1928, Dale County, Alabama. 3. REV. JAMES LEVIN MATHISON, b. December 12, 1843, Henry County, Alabama; d. March 21, 1918, Ozark, Dale County, Alabama. 4. ELIZABETH MATHISON, b. 1844; m. JOHN CROWLEY, December 28, 1870, Henry County, AL. 5. REV. GEORGE WASHINGTON MATHISON, b. November 17, 1846, Edwin, Henry County, Alabama; d. June 11, 1931, Henry County, Alabama. 6. SARAH MATHISON, b. 1848; m. SEABORN WEATHERBY, January 30, 1869, Henry County, AL. 7. REV. ELIAS TIPTON MATHISON, b. July 11, 1855; d. June 07, 1899; m. ELIZABETH WEATHERBY, October 11, 1873, Henry County, AL. 8. GEORGE CROWLEY, April 22, 1876, Henry County, AL. Hope to hear from you, Steve P.S. Rev. Si Mathison and his sons, Rev. 1. IMPORTANT GLOVER NEWS!
    2. Steve Groh
    3. Greetings Margie, My name is Steve Groh and I think I have some Glover information that might be of interest to you. My Great Great Grandfather, J. W. Mathison, Sr. married an Annie Jane Glover in Henry County (probably not very far from Skipperville). According to family history she was very beautiful and had been married once or twice before. Her true Maiden name is unknown (and I would really love to know it!). I have also seen her name listed as Annie Jane Creel. You mentioned that Eli Glover remarried in 1859 to Mrs. A. J. Corbitt in Henry Co. and they had several more children. If "A.J." is Anne Jane....and if Eli died within the following decade. PERHAPS this is the same woman who married J.W. Mathison, Sr. in 1867. You also implied that one of Eli and A.J.'s children was an Alfred J. Glover. In my Great Grandfather's obituary (J.W. Mathison, Jr.), it mentions a half-brother, A. G. Glover, who resides at Daleville, Ala. VERY SUSPICIOUS! Final note: My GGgrandfather fought with the 37th Alabama infantry. The surnames Corbitt, and Glover also appear on these muster rolls....I wonder if A.J. met her love interests through a confederate brother and lost a few husbands in the war before marrying my ancestor? Below are some hard facts taken from Descendancy Chart. JOHN WESLEY MATHISON, SR. was born December 31, 1841 in Henry County, Alabama, and died March 28, 1928 in Dale County, Alabama. He married ANN JANE GLOVER December 10, 1867 in Henry County, AL. She was born November 27, 1841, and died December 17, 1905. Notes for JOHN WESLEY MATHISON, SR.: Enlisted at Henry County, Alabama in January 1862 and served as a Private in the 37th Alabama Infantry / Company H and served until he was paroled at the close of the war at Eufaula, Alabama. - 1921 Census of Confederate Soldiers Children of JOHN MATHISON and ANN GLOVER are: JOHN WESLEY3 MATHISON, JR., b. January 11, 1869, Henry County, Alabama; d. August 15, 1935, Defuniak Springs, Walton County, Florida. CHARLES EDGAR MATHISON, b. January 26, 1880; d. July 16, 1970. JAMES LEVIN MATHISON, b. August 03, 1887; d. November 15, 1955, his home near Ozark, Alabama MARY MATHISON ELLA MATHISON, b. January 26, 1880; d. October 25, 1916. JOHN WESLEY MATHISON, JR. was born January 11, 1869 in Henry County, Alabama, and died August 15, 1935 in Defuniak Springs, Walton County, Florida. He married MALDRA CLYDE DOWLING February 17, 1904 in Defuniak Springs, Florida, daughter of MARION DOWLING and URSULA ATKINSON. She was born April 15, 1883 in Ozark, Dale County, Alabama, and died November 1973 in Sanger, Denton County, Texas. Notes for JOHN WESLEY MATHISON, JR.: Rev. J. W. Mathison helped to establish the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in Defuniak Springs, Florida. With a membership of sixteen, Rev. Mathison helped to build the new church near the Court house in 1902. - Source: an article from an old Defuniak Springs newspaper The following excerpt is from John Wesley Mathison's obituary as recorded on the front page of the Defuniak Springs newspaper, "The Breeze" on Thursday, August 22, 1935 - under the title "Walton Loses a Good Citizen" " Mr. Mathison was united in marriage in 1904 to Miss Maldra C. Dowling, who, with five of the six children born of the union, survives him -- one daughter, the eldest, Lois, -- dying some half-score years ago. Remaining relatives include a brother, C. E. Mathison, of this place; another brother, J. L. Mathison of Skipperville, Ala., and a sister, Mrs. Mary Searcy, likewise of that city. A half-sister, Mrs. Lou Sowell, lives in Defuniak, and a half-brother, A. G. Glover, resides at Daleville, Ala." I'm excited about this possible connection and hope to hear from you soon. Sharon, I think both libraries have about the same on Henry County, Alabama information; but, the Houston Memorial Library (Local History Room) has more microfilm and census index books that you would find useful. Plus, we have lots of information on the counties that came out of Henry County that you will most assuredly have to look in. 2. You might be able to take a hand held recorder and read the info and later transcribe it. It is a shame you can't make an actual copy because their records are not protected and will eventually turn to dust. In some court houses I have been in they have actually disassembled the records and placed the sheets into archival pages. If Henry County were to ever do this then perhaps they would allow us to make copies. They have a pre-printed form they use to record marriage info on with the seal for, if I remember correctly, $2.00 a page. Not sure about the price. Jeanette

All of the southeast Alabama counties are in the process of compiling information for each counties Heritage Book (Millenium). If you have family from that area, you are entitled to submit 150 words and a copy of a picture free and you don't even have to buy the book--unless you want to.
