I'm searching for information on my great-grandfather, who was, according to pension papers we've gotten from the state archives, a private in Company D, 12th Alabama Infantry. I think I've also seen this unit called the "Coffee County Rangers". His name is George Washington Searcy, b. June 13, 1828, d. August 15, 1914, and his burial location is near Echo in Henry County. He was shot through both thighs at Seven Pines, VA, on May 31, 1862, this also according to his pension papers. I have found record of a couple of other men with the same name who were POW's and were paroled from a couple of Union Army prisons, and there is one man with the same name who died in a field hospital (in Virginia, I think). There are also a couple of George Washington Searcy's in Henry County during the time frame I am looking for, one who is DEFINITELY too old and married to Nancy (Wood) Searcy, another who is a possibility (b. approx 1831 according to census), but with NO evidence to prove OR disprove! George married Sallie Ann Webb in the late 1860s to 1870s, probably in Dale County, and they had 14 children together, 10 of which lived. 4 infant sons are buried in Pinckard Memorial Cemetery. In any case, I'm looking for info on D Co. 12th AL, maybe a regimental history or a copy of a roster, and I'm wondering where George came from. He was apparently kicked out of his family after a scandal, so I guess that's why I can't find him anywhere. I have a little more info on him, but I'm afraid I have taken too much space here already! I'm posting this to the several county lists in the area because so much of the history of one is tied to another!! Thanks in advance!!! Scott Armstrong Tallahassee, FL
There is a huge WRIGHT book in the Houston-Love Memorial Library in Dothan, Alabama. It would be worth ordering the index or particular pages through interlibrary-loan program. It is quite thick (the book). It as written--I think--by a WRIGHT. Taking a brief break from history and genealogy. Putting up a Christmas page that hasn't a thing to do with research other than that I might tempt a niece or two into interest in other subjects when they go in to see the Christmas page. So checking these things is next to impossible. I'm not even sure which Solomon Wright donated the land for New Prospect Church. This is what I do know...according to the records of George Warren Wright: Solomon Wright, Jr. was born in 1753. In 1786 he married a Reynolds (Delilia?) in Darlington County, South Carolina. He is buried in the Wright's Chapel Cemetery in Henry County, Alabama. His children were all born in Darlington County, South Carolina (with the possible exception of his first son)....and many of these children moved to Henry County. Children: John, Ezekiel, Spenser, Charity, Miriah, Levin, William, Henry, Sarah, Gillis, and Lydia. (the William Wright mentioned above was born in 1797 in Darlington, S.C.) I have no idea if this helps...but here's hoping, Steve
Do you know whether there was any connection of this family to that of Sands STANDLEY/ STANLEY of the PeeDee? The book says that some of his sons died in Henry Co., AL where my James STANLEY died. Greetings Everyone, I wrote awhile back expressing interest in New Prospect Baptist Church in Henry County, near the community of Edwin. Several other people posted in response expressing their mutual interest. It is with that in mind that I am posting the following brief history. This has been taken from a two page typed document mailed to me by a former member of the church. If you would like to see if this relates to your surname/s, scroll down to the end of the document: see you at the bottom :-) P.S. I do not know when this was written...I assume within the last 15 years. NEW PROSPECT BAPTIST CHURCH New Prospect Church Has Years of History By F. A. Carroll "In the year 1874, a preacher by the name of Chesshire came riding through the community, south of Texasville, one Sunday afternoon and when he reached the place where the church now stands, he stopped and began looking around. He probably knew there was no other church around and he saw the community had become thickly populated. He4 also saw just across the road a small cemetery known as the Cook graveyard. So it occurred to him that it would be a suitable place to erect a bush arbor, hold a series of meetings and perhaps establish a church. Going down the road to a nearby house, he spent the night. The next morning after breakfast he borrowed an ax, returned to the place and began clearing out a place in the thick woods beside the road. Several of the surrounding people went in with him as soon as they had erected a large bush arbor. They then went out into the surrounding woods, and cut logs and placed them under the arbor to be used for pews. After everything was completed he departed home. We have no record as to where he was from, but evidently some place outside the community. On leaving for home, he told the people he would return the following Sunday morning to begin a series of meetings. On that Sunday morning at the appointed time he returned and found a fairly good sized congregation awaiting him, and thus the first sermon ever preached at New Prospect Church. As the days passed more and more and more interest was manifested with several converts. People were coming from miles around on ox wagons, mule wagons, horse back, on foot, anyway to get there. By the time the meetings closed there was talk of organizing a church and after holding monthly services under the arbor for two or three months, they organized the church and named it Prospect. A few years later, to distinguish it from another Prospect a few miles away, it became known as New Prospect. Sol Wright, who owned the land at that time, gave the church a deed of two acres of land and in recent years Ralph Brown has deeded an extra one-half acre joining the two acres to be used as cemetery purposes. The first building was constructed of logs which were used until about the year 1888, when it was torn away and a larger frame building was constructed. We might add that it was here in this building a few years later Dr. Bob Jones, founder of Bob Jones College and who was a native of Houston County, conducted his first revival at the age of 16. This frame building was used until about the year 1957 when it was moved away and the present brick structure, which was originally block, was erected. Ministers who have pastured the church after Chesshire were Joe Hendley from Abbeville, R. M. Kency from Kency, John Guilford, Daleville, Preacher Cherry, Poplar Head or Dothan, Charley Searcy, Abbeville, Will James, Terese, Luther Norris, Long, Columbus, Durward Adkinson, Ariton, Clarence Culpepper, Eufala, Gilbert Lacey of Dothan, and the present Wayne Parker of Midalnd City, Alabama. The early members and supporters of the church were of the families of Cooks, Thurmonds, Dunlaps, Mathisons, Hicks, Wrights, Williams, Carrolls, Trawicks, Owens, Peels, Martins, Bushes, Bedsoles, Walkers, Adams, Browns, Knights, Hines and Beamons, with George Hix and Lum Adams as two of the first deacons and Ella Adams as first clerk." I would love to know if there is any way to find out more about the history of this church. If anyone knows how to contact the current Minister, I would love to hear from them. Also, If anyone has books on Bob Jones that mention this church or his life in this section of Alabama, I would love to hear from them as well. I am researching the MATHISON and WRIGHT surnames mentioned above....and the Searcy and Guilford lines also cross with the Mathisons. Take Care - Steve Groh

Le you wrote RE: Boutwells, "Would you have a Nancy Boutwell in your collateral lines. They merge with my Dowling Line in the 1700s. John Dowling married Nancy Boutwell. Le" Yes, I do have a Nancy Boutwell, she is not the one you mentioned, but I thought I would toss her in. If she is mine, and I think so, she was born in, Baker County, GA June 1826. If this sounds familiar, let me know. I have been remiss in my Boutwell research. Nancy's father Stephen Boutwell (b abt 1795 SC, died after 1860 and bef 1870) is as far back as I can go. Sincerely, Frances
Mary, Maybe this will help a bit: Jesse J. Elmore stated in the 1907 Confederate Soldiers Census: lived at Hartford, Geneva County, Ala; b. Sep 1, 1833 in Greene County, Ga; enlisted at Campbellton, Fla in Feb 1862 as Pvt, Co F, 11th Fla Inf Rgt and continued until wounded at Petersburg, Va Sep 24, 1864 and furloughed home; did not return. It was fairly normal for folks from the lower counties to enlist in Florida regiments. His grave dates: Sep 1, 1832-Feb 20, 1916; m. P.C. (G.), 1840-1913; buried at Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery, Hartford. The Elmores are not listed as being buried to any degree in either Dale Coffee or Henry counties. I would try looking at Geneva and Houston. Deo Vindice, Homer
Steve, My gggrandparents were William and Sarah Pierce Wright married Aug 02, 1849, Henry County, AL. My ggrandparents were Merity (M.) and Sarah Jane Wright (daughter of William and Sarah Pierce Wright) Hicks who were married in Henry County, AL on Jan 14, 1873. Who was Mary Jane BURCH's father I will bet her grandfather was Joseph BURCH 1750-1818. He was building a log cabin on the west bank of the Olcmulgee River when he was killed by Native Americans March 1818. His son Alfred Littleberry was my greatgrandmother Gay's father. Her name was Martha Elizabeth BURCH the second wife of Frank GAY. These are my maternal grandmother's grandparents. Her parents Hardy B.
